The essence of human freedom, of civilization itself, is cooperation: cooperation between friends and family; businesses and customers; entrepreneurs and employees.
History and human experience teach that humans cooperate best when they do so voluntarily, without government coercion. That is why I fully support the eventual transition of control over the internet from the Department of Commerce and to a private entity.
But I also worry that President Barack Obama is hastily rushing the current transfer of power to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which could make it easier for the United Nations to take over the internet.
Today, the internet is so vast and ubiquitous that it is hard to imagine it existing in any other form. But for the first few decades of the internets existence, the basic roadmap for navigating the internetthe Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), the system that allocates and records the unique numerical addresses to computerswas managed by just one man on a voluntary basis.

So what are you going to do about it Mike?.
‘ICANN is the Internet equivalent of a phonebook. They can be replaced by literally anyone. There are already many alternatives.’
Please explain.
They have copyrighted code that registers domain names. Outside of US jurisdiction, other nations would gladly back their claim to copyright protection.
They have more experience dating back to ARPANET volunteers.
I assume they have backdoors in their code.
They are trying to trick us ...
ICANN, a Pack of Liars

So please assure me that there’s an easy fix.
Those screaming “mah freedoms” are just regurgitating media sensationalism. ICANN has for several years now wanted to have a more global environment to write policy for the internationalization of DNS. Being an American corporation, there were restricted by American regulation. Additionally, ICANN has operated outside the US Department of Commerce since 2009, they are simply moving to a new country of operation. The internet “phone book” will become larger with more domain names available that might upset people/corporations in the US because of their direction and or name. .XXX, .cokeacola, .fordsucks, .mormonlies, names like these could go up for sale to the highest bidder upsetting certain corps, political personalities and religious groups in the US.
I think it’s also a fair bet that Google will be glad to work with foreign ICANN branches and/or factions.
They can use their search engine software to cluster online complaint petitions instantly.
So when the Sweden Plan kicks in, [aka ‘global governence’ to stop ‘hate speech’] it will be easy and quick. It’s just a matter of when they want to do it. Probably after the election.
I’ve read some of your backgrounders.
So what effective action can be done prior to Sept 30?
You’ve suggested impeaching Obama over this. That will NEVER happen.
What can Congress do at this point, especially if Obama’s pen and phone are in action?
I am happy to call my senators’ offices, but what would I say? I’m not going to suggest impeachment - I’ll be written off as a nut job.
Do you not think it's possible that freedom of speech could be controlled or that taxation wouldn't occur?
I'm not criticizing you, I'm only curious of your views.
Is Paul Rosenzweig a mindless sensationalist screaming mah freedoms?
Are Senator Sessions and Grassley in the same basket?
Grassley specifically agrees with Rosenzweig in almost every category.
Paul Rosenzweig the ‘sensationalist screamer’ ...
Former Homeland administrator.
Runs a firm that consults for Homeland.
Author of cyberware research and freedom of speech concerns.
ADVISER to ICANN’s transition process — some of his advise was adopted.
Obama is doing his job for Global Integration so Terrorists can move Freely around the World
In addition, corporations, governments, individuals create domain names by the dozens than file a copyright claim to it. If Freerepublic decided to use .republic it might already be copyrighted by another entity and therefore would be rejected. Freerepublic would have to use the .com.
The whole internet can not be controlled.
No, we should not - but we will.
obama has already done it, and the effect will be censorship, fines, and jail for dissenting opinions.
All of obama’s favorite stuff.
‘So what effective action can be done prior to Sept 30?’
Feel free to support congress with their legislation. Who knows? I hope I’m wrong.
IMHO the best thing we can do now is take down names, spread info to others, copy research to hard drives and flash drives, and brace ourselves for the worst.
There is too little public awareness.
[Dont expect the Waffle House to actually do anything...]
Excellent name for the current Congress.LOL
In anarchy, the internet is all about tech.
Expertise.
ICANN was started up by ARPANET pioneers. They have more expertise in registering domain names than the rest of the world put together.
I would rather keep them happy here in the US.
But Obama spread discord in the ICANN team and tempted them to move.
If bad goes to worse we can amend the constitution punitively — an excoriation amendment. And we would need to network outside the internet or via webmaster trickery.
But I doubt it will get that bad. As awareness increases, I hope they soften their goals.
‘The whole internet can not be controlled.’
Knowledge is power.
ICANN knows the internet registration system inside out.
And google knows how to mass-search data.
In an anarchial struggle between foreign powers, those two would be far more powerful than google ever was on its own.
The Washington Free Beacon reveals that ICANN has been plagued by corruption already, even before the Obama administration set out to transfer oversight to foreign sources who could prove to be a bad lot:
The international organization the Obama administration is pushing to hand control over the internet to has provided official accreditation to people who have transferred technology to Iran, worked with North Korea, and ordered murders-for-hire, according to congressional testimony that raises questions about the organizations practices.
Obama administration efforts to hand over control of Americas Internet to The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, an international coalition of 162 countries and entities, have sparked outrage on Capitol Hill, where critics allege the move would stifle the free flow of information.
Experts familiar with ICANNs structure testified before Congress on Wednesday that the organization has failed to act in a transparent and accountable fashion, raising questions about how it would operate free from U.S. government oversight.
On multiple occasions, ICANN has provided official accreditation to people operating as an arm of a criminal network, including one person who pled guilty to transferring U.S. technology to Iran, according to testimony by John Horton, president and CEO of LegitScript, which works with international governments.
ICANN continues to provide legitimacy to these organizations despite mounting evidence they have engaged in illegal activity, according to Horton, who explained that these criminal sites remain online because ICANN green-lighted the registrars refusal to investigate or take action.
One of these outfits is ABSystems, a rogue internet pharmacy network that provided cover to its founder, Paul Le Roux, who has been dubbed the most successful criminal mastermind youve never heard of.
In December 2013, Paul Le Roux pleaded guilty to crimes involving North Korean methamphetamine trafficking, the transfer of US technology to Iran, and several murders-for-hire, according to Hortons testimony, which was offered to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Mr. Le Roux, a Zimbabwean national remains in US custody, pending sentencing.
Le Roux financed his illegal endeavors by operating as an ICANN-accredited domain name registrar, creating a rogue internet pharmacy network through his ability to register domain names unimpeded, according to Horton.
Gee whiz. It's already clear ICANN's plagued by some of the worst people around if they allowed men like that to ply their trade without opposition. And it's just one more reason why I think separate internet management agencies should be established even if ICANN doesn't go under bad foreign controls. These separate companies might have to charge more money for services but that could ensure better trustworthiness.
This is proof beyond a doubt that ICANN cannot be entrusted to foreigners who could serve shady interests. And who knows what Iran's been doing with that technology Le Roux gave them?
If there is a list, please put me on it.
It is not on the sidebar anymore :(
