If the Chelsea bomber had packed his second pressure-cooker IED in a less eye-catching bag, two men might not have removed itand it might have killed dozens at an open-air restaurant.
Had the bomber chosen a simple black or solid hue wheeled suitcase, the two men who happened by might not have even noticed it sitting on a dimly lit patch of pavement on the uptown side of West 27th Street.
They might have just walked right on by, a high-ranking cop said on Monday.
But the wheelie bag the bomber left had an eye-catching pattern whose multi colors included green and what the cop describes as I dont know, maybe puce or something.
Distinctive, the cop added.
Video surveillance footage later recovered by detectives shows that this out of the ordinary bag clearly aroused the interest of the two men who sauntered over to it. They unzipped it, and one of them stuck an exploring hand inside. They then took out a pressure cooker in a white plastic trash bag, and the two examined it for a few moments. They had their backs to the camera, so it is difficult to determine how they may have fiddled with it, if at all. They then ambled off with the bag, a fine bit of mungo, as street finds are sometimes called.
All of this was right around the time a bomb in a pressure cooker exploded on West 23rd Street, four blocks downtown. Police believe that the devices were built and placed by the same person and that the only difference between the two was that the one on West 23rd Street detonated, and the one on West 27th Street did not....

Let’s be sure to tell the bad guys how to hide their bombs better.
God is using everyone to protect us.
That was my first thought as well. We have to do our part and get Trump/Pence elected and start turning the country around.
I’m sure the smart ones know, already.
You can’t even drink a bottle of beer without someone standing there waiting for the empty.
Agreed...homeless folks & thieves were the saving grace. Funny how most Biblical lessons are taught using the “least among us.”
Plus, consider the race being delayed in NJ so that the detonation resulted in no injuries. Not to mention the off-duty part time cop (and shooting instructor!) who happened to be in exactly the right place to take down the POS Somali.
Maybe we have been given a temporary reprieve to see if we make the right choice in a few weeks?
The article confirms a lot of what FReepers suspected and predicted:
1. It was terrorism
2. The bombings were linked
3. It was Muslems
4. The stopping of the car was no lucky break, it was being watched
5. The car was heading in the direction of Kennedy Airport
6. That car contained persons known to the perp
And last but not least:
7. His family “dinno nuffin” about what he was up to but were off on a spur-of-the-moment trip to Turkey/Saudi Arabia/Pakistan
And we now have two very ordinary people who were very real heros that night:
1. The man who id’ the perp in the street
2. The woman who called 911 when she realised she’d seen another device
(in addition of course to the guy who took out the knife-man earlier in MN.)
Don’t forget the two scavengers who found the backpack in NJ.
The Fourth Estate is the Fifth Column.
Never use gay-fabulous colors in NYC.
So good..tell them what to eat yout for.
Plenty of “smart” bad guys make dumb mistakes. My point is that the world doesn’t need to know every detail of why something went wrong in a terrorist plot.
I would love to see people who pull such “pranks” beaten to a bloody pulp by people who take their actions at face value. The prankster is training people to oignore obvious danger by making people who react appropriately look silly. How many people who watch that “funny” video will cooly ignore an unattended bag because they don’t want to look silly.
This sort of thing will get good people killed.
Allahwahoo Bagbar!
Woman who found the bomb after it was removed from the suitcase.
If you see something, steal it.
New York values saved the day!?
That was my first thought after reading the article!
