The outspoken Pauline priest had performed over 70,000 exorcisms over the past 30 years.
The renowned exorcist, Pauline Father Gabriele Amorth, has died at the age of 91.
A priest of the diocese of Rome, Father Amorth was admitted to hospital a few weeks ago suffering from pulmonary complications, according to Italian media reports.
His death was announced by the San Paolo group which has published many of his books.
Born in Modena on May 1, 1925, Gabriele Amorth entered the Pauline congregation in Alba in 1947, five years after meeting its founder, Blessed Giacomo Alberione. Ordained in 1951, he was appointed exorcist of the diocese of Rome in 1985 by Cardinal Ugo Poletti.
Often sought out by media around the world for his views on exorcism and understanding the struggle against evil, Father Amorth once confirmed to the Register that he thought Hitler and Stalin were certainly possessed by the devil, but denied that that fact removed their own personal responsibility for their actions.

Last year, at a conference in Rome, he said ISIS is Satan in reference to the so-called Islamic State which has been brutally murdering Christians and other minorities in the Middle East in an effort to create a worldwide caliphate. Members of the terrorist group have since been trying to spread their atrocities to the West.
By 2015, Father Amorth had performed over 70,000 exorcisms over 29 years, often repeating the rite on the same persons. In 1990, he founded the International Association of Exorcists and was president until he retired, in 2000. On Sept. 8 this year, he was awarded the “Medal of Liberation” by the prefect of Rome, in the presence of Italys Minister of Defense, for the important role he played in the partisan struggle against the Nazis in 1943.
I read his book, “An Exorcist Tells His Story”, he had a lot of wild stories to tell. RIP Father Amorth, and well done!
“The outspoken Pauline priest had performed over 70,000 exorcisms over the past 30 years.”
That’s 2,333 per year over those thirty years.
That’s more than six a day every day for thirty years.
I find that difficult to believe.

70,000 over nearly 30 years, huh? Well he certainly didn’t exorcise my ability to do math.
When I read this story the first thing I did was the math. Gabe and Wilt Chamberlain were very busy.
I think many of those exorcisms were quickies done in the confessional. Not all exorcisms are long drawn out ordeals involving green vomit and head spinning. Also, I think that not all of them, or even most of them, were actual possession but obsession instead, which is simply being harrassed by demons but not possessed.
I was thinking the same thing. Perhaps he was doing them as group exorcisms?
What you are describing sounds more like counseling.
Read his book and then you will have a better understanding. And if not at least you will have had a pretty interesting book.
Could be.
Okay, thanks.
RIP, Father Amorth .
Although I still highly recommend reading his book, my answer could have better. Think of it this way. Houses can be “exorcised” of demons by the priest coming in, spreading around holy water, and saying prayers. What happens is the house is put into such a condition that the demons cannot stand being there anymore. The same holds true for an individual who has somehow caught the attention of a demon or demons, very likely by fooling around with quija boards or automatic writing, or by living a depraved sinful life, and thereby inviting the demon into his life. A priest can do the same for an individual as he can for a house. The person was not possessed but merely obssessed.
Yes I understood that, however, being obsessed does not meet the definition of an exorcism. You have to admit that 6 is a lot of exorcisms to be performed on a daily basis over such an extended period of time. So either the definition is not accurate or the number of exorcisms he performed is being overstated. It really is a niggly point, and I am not trying to be obtuse either. My need to be exact always rubs people the wrong way. I would think I would learn better, but for some reason I need order and exactness. Just ignore me, like most people do, LOL. It's one of those foibles I am cursed with, and I guess I am too old to change now.
But thanks, I accept your answer. But I will try to read his book since you recommended it. Perhaps that might make it come to the exactness and order I apparently need.
I don’t think father amorph himself goes by that exact definition of exorcism. You will find that out when you read the book. If a person came to him troubled by a demon, or a curse, or some sort of spell, if he fixed it he called that an exorcism. He says early on in his book that actual possession is very rare. Therefore in order for him to have done all those exorcisms he would have had to have had a broader definition for it.
That makes sense, and brings order back into my realm. 8>)

Often in a group setting such as a worship service the entities are driven out, but return after a person falls back down again. I’ve seen it where if a person misses a Sunday worship service they feel down the entire next week.
That’s why individual daily/constant prayer is very important.
