Hillary Clinton, style icon? The unexpected inspiration for women’s spring fashion

By Robin Givhan September 16 at 12:57 PM

NEW YORK — The designer Derek Lam was perched on a wooden chair in a penthouse suite of the Greenwich Hotel that looked as though it had been air-lifted from Santa Fe. Dressed in white jeans and a dark shirt, he was describing the inspiration for his spring 2017 collection, and the words that he used again and again were “strong” and “independent.”

Specifically, he’d been inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe, the artist who was so often described as “handsome,” a polite way of saying that she was not a great beauty. But that striking face of hers, alongside her formidable body of work, made her an icon nonetheless.

It was her strength, off-putting at first but eventually embraced, that captivated Lam, he explained. And there it was at last in this city’s hectic fashion week, when audiences couldn’t even be sure whether they’d be seeing fall clothes or spring ones on the runway — finally, a thread that connected so many disparate collections.

Strength.

In the latest round of fashion shows that ended Thursday, there were countless iterations of men’s shirting, various shades of orange and a surge in platform shoes. Proenza Schouler, in particular, dazzled the eye with hand-woven dresses, canvas and leather jackets, and an intarsia mink coat that looked great no matter what season it’s intended for.

So go ahead and invest in oversized shirts and and blazers because that trend isn’t going away. Pants are still roomy, the dresses are emblazoned with prints and the fabrics range from lace to velvet.

The link won’t work for me.
I do have one comment about something said: “Pants are still roomy”. Say what?
If any woman in this country knows of a source of pants that aren’t leggings skinny, I’d love to know what it is.

“The unexpected inspiration for women’s spring fashion should include metal poking like things creating bulges at various parts of the body.”

Michael Obama cornered that market years ago.

Pity Trump & Co can’t (won’t?) make a re-do of that commercial with a Hil lookalike. That would be funny.

I dress the same as the guys for work-jeans, cargo shorts, T-shirts, work boots-so I like to have a few girly dresses, skirts, heels, etc in case I go out to dinner. And I’d rather be boiled in oil than wear baggy pants and a jacket/shirt made from sofa upholstery and saddle blankets in an effort to look like that prize heifer-if rumor is true, she outweighs me by about 170 lbs, and between the cut of the jackets and the busy patterns, she looks even bigger-her fashion adviser should be hanged...

Wendy's was 30 years ahead of the curve.

God I remember that! One of the funniest ads ever made."Next...evening wear" and she comes out with the same outfit carrying a huge flashlight.

Classic.

LOL.
I can’t remember who said it but someone said that her jackets reminded him of the doormat outside his Dad’s garden shed.

Some women can carry off the heavy “upholstery fabric” look but shorter more stout women should pass on it. It just looks dumpy.

Why would women want to wear horse blankets?

To protect the climate, and save the planet?

The fashion mags and industry must have taken a hit with pandering to MO, the PC crowd, and HRC.

Why continue to push HRC's lack of style and class?

Transgenders pushed the gay/metrosexuals out of the fashion biz?

The heavier, coarse weave jackets she wears look just exactly like some of the plain, everyday saddle blankets sold at the ranch store out here...

WOW, that looks like PJs. It shouldn’t be a surprise they probably didn’t want to tax her energy so they didn’t make her change.

If I knew her and she asked for my opinion on her attire I would ask “lose a bet?”

The congenital liar and chronic criminal hillary is a style icon...if your “style” features old curtains, rugs and potato sacks.

IIRC, the Soviets complained about the ad, and the state department had wendys pull it.

Per Scott Adams yesterday:

” ...Clinton went from being a stylish and energetic personality to a hospice patient dressed like a North Korean dictator at a rave.”
