California's Boom Is Poised To Go Bust -- And Liberals' Dream Of Scandinavia On The Pacific
Forbes.com ^ | Sep. 15' 2016 | Joel Kotkin

As its economy started to recover in 2010, progressives began to hail California as a kind of Scandinavia on the Pacific — a place where liberal programs also produce prosperity. The state’s recovery has won plaudits from such respected figures as The American Prospect’s Harold Meyerson and the New York Times’ Paul Krugman.

Gov. Jerry Brown, in Bill Maher’s assessment, “took a broken state and fixed it.” There’s a political lesson being injected here, as well, as blue organs like The New Yorker describe California as doing far better economically than nasty red-state Texas.

But if you take a look at long-term economic trends, or drive around the state with your eyes open, the picture is far less convincing. To be sure, since 2010 California’s job growth has outperformed the national average, propelled largely by the tech-driven Bay Area; its 14% employment expansion over the past six years is just a shade below Texas’. But dial back to 2001, and California’s job growth rate is 12%, less than half that of Texas’ 27%. With roughly 10 million fewer residents, Texas has created almost 2.8 million jobs since the turn of the millennium, compared to 2.0 million in California.

They seem not to recognize that that human societies also need to be sustainable, something that California’s trajectory certainly seems unlikely to accomplish.

In a nutshell.

Having lived in California my entire life I can state with authority the only ugly thing there is in this State is Democrats.

Democrats are so ugly they drive people, and business away from California.

I have lived in CA for 46 years. When I arrived here, Ronald Reagan was governor, and this state was booming. Since then, it has been a downhill slide.

Jerry Brown is a nutcase who along with most of the governors who have been in power since Reagan has run this state into the ground. The public employees unions have huge pensions which are killing this state. The fiscal condition of CA is dire due to massive underfunded public employee pensions at all government levels, city, county and state.

Instead of fixing fiscal problems, Brown is creating more. He is making it near impossible for middle income residents to remain in CA. Yes, we have the greatest climate in the US, if not the world. However, there comes a time when even that is not enough. Electric bills, water bills and other living expenses are going through the roof all because of Brown and his corrupt band of legislators. We simply are a mini version of all that has been happening in Washington, DC.

For the first time, we are talking about moving to another state, and that is not an easy thing to do when you are in your 70s and had expected to be living here for the remainder of your live.

??????????

Bill Maher? If he's anybody's idea of a political pundit, things are even worse than we thought.

Liberals in California actually believe they can tax and spend their way into prosperity.

Good. I’ve been here since 1969 and planning to move to Vegas (where I already own property) in a few years.

I moved to California on Route 66 in 1961. With retirement approaching, we are looking to spend it in another state. My 81 year old dad, whose job relocated him back in the early ‘70’s, came out to visit a couple years ago. We were driving someplace one day and he lamented, “This place was paradise when we moved here.” Now, just about everyone you talk to wants to move away.
