FBI agents may impersonate journalists while conducting undercover investigations, and an agent who posed as an editor with the Associated Press during a 2007 investigation did not violate agency policies, the Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General found in a report released Thursday.
The conclusion sparked consternation across social media by journalists, civil rights groups and some legal experts, who have argued that the practice by its very existence threatens to heighten public mistrust of reporters, damage journalists' credibility and have a chilling effect on sources and whistleblowers who may fear that their contacts in the media are actually undercover agents
We still are in some areas. And I totally agree that the laws are deliberately unevenly applied. This has always been the case. The privileged class gets a pass, as do "local dignitaries" for local offenses. But investigators posing as journalists will just use the evidence, they won't charge "you lied to a person who was posing as a journalist." Too easy to get out of that in court.
Keep in mind the following:
When asked directly, an officer of the State/Federal executive branch in the United States cannot lie as to their oath. They do not have do respond, directly, but you have options.
That means, an undercover officer or other duly sworn officer MAY give deflecting information as to their position BUT, they cannot say a definite NO to your direct question as to whether they are a police/peace officer.
If you ask, “Are you a re police officer?” and that person replies, “Do I look like a police office?”. That person is a cop.
In the end, that officer CAN NOT say, “No, I’m not a police officer.” That will end up in ENTRAPMENT.
Open-carry Journalists?
Good point.
Why not? Journalists can pose as journalists.
“Damage journalists’ credibility ...”
Hahahahahahahaha. They’ve done a great job of that all by themselves.
Can you cite the basis for this? Any legal precedents or rulings? Cuz I don’t think so.
Seems only fair since journalists are posing as journalists (with a few exceptions to the rule)
Urban myth. They can lie about anything, and they do. After all, they are from the government.
No different than Clinton/Democrat operatives posing as reporters, journalists, talk show hosts, editors, movie directors, university presidents, FBI and IRS and EPA and FDA and DOE Directors...
The Famous But Incompetent can pose any anything; they can even try to pose as law enforcement agents.
Well put.
It took them nine years to render a decision?
Nine years?
,,,,, all whilst the republican’s in congress just sat on their asses and watched our liberties evaporate .
Today 70% of Americans believe we are moving in the wrong direction ,,, and that includes many Dems. and independents . Just make sure to get out and vote .
