THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

IRVING BERLIN

AS THOUSANDS CHEER

JUDY GARLAND & FRED ASTAIRE: “EASTER PARADE”

After the success of “Face the Music,” in 1933 Irving and Moss Hart collaborated on another Broadway show, but this time it was just a review, without a plot. The theme was the Depression. Irving was wary of writing a review, but the show ran for over a year and became a huge success. It was a massive moneymaker for Irving.

Sing these words to the melody that everybody knows: “Smile and show your dimple...” That was the title of this song in 1917 when Irving first jotted it down. He gave it a new set of lyrics for the show and created his most memorable song. It became so successful that MGM built an entire movie musical around it in 1948 from the Arthur Freed unit. This is from the movie.

SARAH VAUGHN & BILLY ECKSTINE: “EASTER PARADE”

This 1957 recording has a fine orchestration behind it and slows it down, giving it a different focus.

You’re very welcome.
I always feel I can’t do enough to give tribute to the people who died and the president who dealt with it like a man.

BING CROSBY: “HEATWAVE”

This 1956 recording captures Bing in the twilight of his career. He can still swing, but in his own laid back way.

MEYER DAVIS: “HOW’S CHANCES?”

This 1933 recording highlights the change from Twenties dance bands to Thirties bands. The sound and rhythm are different. The frenetic pace of the Twenties is gone, perhaps related to the social changes caused by the Depression.

ELLA FITZGERALD: “HOW’S CHANCES?”

Ella’s 1958 recording makes this tune swing. She takes the lyrics seriously, and you can see why Sinatra held her in awe.
