Dallas police Chief David Brown announced his retirement Thursday, bringing an end to a tenure marked by police unions that at one time demanded his resignation and by widespread praise for his response to a July sniper attack that killed five officers.

Brown issued a statement saying he will retire Oct. 22 after 33 years with Dallas police.

Going out on a high note, I suppose.

I know others disagree here on FR, but his rushed robot bombing of a cornered and apparently contained suspect was over the top and set a very, very bad precedence for our police. I recall the bombing in Philly not that long ago, Waco, and others. We do not need militarized police taking such extreme steps. Otherwise who’s next on the receiving end of a police-delivered bomb. An otherwise innocent Swatting victim?

Isn’t this guy the one whose son murdered a police officer, and he ordered his officers to give his son’s hearse a respectful “with honors” motorcade to the funeral/cemetery, and all the cops were livid?

I would imagine a lot of squeeze and problems going on in that Department , lines being drawn and sides to choose, easier to retire.

You are incredibly wrong. That guys life wasn’t worth killing a few more cops to get him alive. He was holed up and backed into a corner, very well armed.
But that isn’t the main reason there was urgency. He was threatening to detonate a series of bombs spread around downtown.
All he had to do was start dialing cell numbers and dozens or hundreds of innocent people could have been killed. The streets were jammed with people.

The a-hole went out of his way to convince them of his bombs. Once that is the game, you kill him to stop any bombs from being detonated. That’s the PhD level of stupidity to get yourself bombed. Its happened once or twice in America, your fears are a little extreme.

And for all the hype about philly. MOVE built a fortified bunker on the roof. They shot at fire, police, and anyone who approached their building. Some cops were shot as they tried to make arrests.
Loudspeakers were broadcasting Cuban and black panther propaganda at max levels all day and night. The trash was all held inside the houses.

So yes, in the face of this bunch of idiots a satchel charge was dropped on the bunker on the rooftop. A fire began and couldn’t be stopped due to gunfire.

I am fine with the Philly incident like what...30 years ago? If you don’t hole up, have a long shootout with the cops, convince them that you will fight to the death...its pretty likely you wont get bombed.

I agree with that.

This x 1000

There was no doubt what he had done and stated he would do. Target identified - target pinned down - target given ample opportunities to surrender and refused - target neutralized with no more casualties among the good guys.

Yikes, close to 40 by my recollection. I was at a magazine and we were getting these incredible B&W photos delivered. Black mayor--Wilson Goode? My favorite quote from the MOVE idiots was about the infestation they were causing by collecting garbage in their building, and the fact that city exterminators kept trying to eliminate the problem:

"Rats are people too!"

If those were the parameters, you’re exactly right.

End the SOB before he can detonate anything.

He didn’t actually order the escort for the parade. His underlings did. (Wink). He clearly was involved in organizing the parade on the expressway, however.
