The second-to-last manufacturing job [2002] I worked was like that. The production people on the floor [~40 or so college kids] did three 3-hour shifts with 10 minute breaks in between for a total of no more than 36 hours/week at $6.50/hr. When I got tagged for forklift op/shipping clerk, I got 39 hours/week until I proved out and was hired in full time with OT & benefits.
