Both candidates want this election to be a referendum on their opponent. I’m starting to think that may just be her strategy - to stay out of the news and purposely let Trump dominate it...with the hope that he keeps stepping in it. Considering that she practically has to pay people now to come to her rallies, there is really no upside for her in being out in public.
Obama and the media are her surrogates and Obama has indicated that he is going to campaign full-time in October for her. People are going to vote for Obama through her.

Bill advised Lynch that Hillary is very ill, they made a deal that in return for no prosecution, (which she would never be able to endure and would be a sympathetic figure) she will withdraw from running for POTUS at an appropriate time. She is now winding down the campaign, the health leaks, less time campaigning, and public episodes are lead ups to her announcement.

Probably a combination of both, but I would tend to think the latter is more of an influencing factor in her lack of appearances on the campaign trail.
