Let's say your tenth-grader forgets his lunch. So you receive a telephone call at work.
Mom, I left my baloney sandwich on the kitchen counter, he tells you. Can you bring it to me, pretty please?
So, what would you do? Id be willing to bet a Moonpie that many parents would drop everything and rush to the school to personally deliver their little snowflakes brown bag lunch.
But that sort of coddling is not allowed at Catholic High School for Boys in Little Rock, Arkansas. As a matter of fact its outright banned.
Catholic High School prides itself on teaching reading, writing, arithmetic and problem-solving.

Townhall is supposed to be a conservative website.
But its editor doesn’t know what conservatism is.
The school’s job is to teach reading, writing, and arithmetic.... PERIOD! Maybe science and social studies too.
Everything else should be left to the parent to make the decisions, including teaching kids to not forget things.
I am sure there are many instances where the parents are at fault for forgetting to put homework away after looking at it, or forgetting to put lunch in their backpack when they are getting other kids ready.
I would be appalled if I saw a sign like this at my kid’s school, ESPECIALLY if they refuse me to bring their lunch!!
I remember getting a call from one of my son’s high school English teachers saying he was willing to work with him after school on his English because he wouldn’t get promoted if he failed.
My son was smart, antsy, very popular, and the class clown
I told the teacher “No.he can do it on his own,why waste time with extra help?” I also said that if he had to repeat the grade it was HIS problem.
I told my son what I had said and he got his act together——and passed.
He is now 50 years old—with a Masters Degree,
.
It’s sad that this is news.
I disagree with you. There is nothing wrong with the school also teaching personal responsibility. And why would the parent be to blame for the child not (taking responsibility for himself or herself) checking to see whether they have their lunch?
Parents and teachers should work together.
I did that once. Results= I was severly lacking a personality. :-)
wtf are you talking about? Townhall.com is not the subject of the piece.
I agree with the school.
PS., don’t allow your son to enlist in the Marine Corps.
It would be one thing if this was about kindergarteners forgetting their lunches and stuff. But this is highschoolers. I have a hard time feeling bad for a highschooler that forgets their lunch. If they starve once for forgetting their lunch you can bet they won’t forget lunch again. Highschoolers shouldn’t have to be coddled.
Good on you. You did the right thing
That sounds like something Vintage.
Especially when they're old enough.
“The schools job is to teach reading, writing, and arithmetic.... PERIOD! Maybe science and social studies too.”
Parents naively thinking that is all schools are teaching their kids... THAT is exactly the reason this country is in the mess it is.
A 10th grader should be able to not only remember to bring his lunch, but should be able to pack it as well. Unless the child has a disability of some sort.
LOL, so you’re admitting you are part of the problem.
Children need to be responsible. Who will teach them if you don’t?
How many times do you think you darling will forget his lunch in the future, if he misses a meal?
Missing one meal is not the end of the world.
As for his homework and books, it’s his responsibility.
Teach him some rules at home, and he’ll extend those to his life outside the home.
You are the prime example why our schools have no rules anymore. They make one and you come unglued.
It does, but then it’s time that all schools from a certain school grade do that and not only high schools.
Dunno if I’m quite on board with this active prohibition on lunch, regardless of the age of the student and how much he/she is responsible.
I recall during my career many long workdays that turned into worknights where I didn’t or couldn’t get a meal for whatever reason. IMO the kind of resulting foul mood and level of distraction I suffered is not a proper “punishment” for a student, of any age, trying to get through an afternoon of learning or testing.
