A car burns as a crowd of more than 100 people gathers following the fatal shooting of a man in Milwaukee, Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that officers got in their cars to leave at one point, and some in the crowd started smashing a squad car's window, and another vehicle, pictured, was set on fire. The gathering occurred in the neighborhood where a Milwaukee officer shot and killed a man police say was armed hours earlier during a foot chase. (Calvin Mattheis/Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel via AP)
At least four businesses were burned and an officer was hurt by a thrown brick in the unrest that erupted on the citys north side Saturday night a few hours after the killing of a black man who authorities say was armed and fleeing a traffic stop.
A Milwaukee alderman called the melee a warning from black residents that they are tired of living under this oppression.
With the city on edge, Gov. Scott Walker activated the National Guard, saying it would be in position to help upon request. He called for continued peace and prayer.
A Guard spokesman, Lt. Col. Gary Thompson, said 125 soldiers were being notified to gather at their local armories and await further instructions.
The dead man was identified by his mother as Sylville Smith, 23. The name and race of the officer who shot him were not immediately released.
Don’t forget the ammo
Scott Walker: day late, dollar short, as always.
Black lives matter! /s
On No!
Officer Is BLACK!
What will the media do?
A rhetorical statement of course! Hell, I've had friends in active duty assigned to foreign hotspots WITH NO AMMO! They were merely a "Show of Force"... IF it hit the fan, only Majors and above could authorize the issuance of live ammo!
After all, we couldn't have some Yahoo actually try to protect himself and cause an international media event..., right!
"Excellent."
Why is this Walker’s problem? Who’s the Mayor again? Governors don’t run cities. Why isn’t Barrett holding a press conference and denouncing the violence?
This is typical Republican defeatism
Valjar has been on the phone earlier today with this Mayor. Wanna bet they won’t have the national guard do a thing? If they do I will be surprised. Unless valjar sees that this helps Trump.
Governor Nixon is inbound from Jeff City. Oh wait! 9 days have yet to pass....
This is what teamobama want. They need this unrest and BLM’s to be upset with whitey and cops. Obama wants to federalize the police. That is the main goal here.
Very powerful groups are in charge now.
I remember in Watts in 1964, orders were shoot to kill the looters. What happened to that sort of backbone?
The Governor is in COMMAND of the state NG.
Sherburn Merrill Becker (November 13, 1876 February 5, 1949) was a Wisconsin politician and the 41st Mayor of Milwaukee (1906 - 1908). He was the last Republican to hold this office.
'nuff said about that. Except for the perp, I guess 'handsup, dontshoot, didn't appeal to him?
The businesses that were burned: autoparts, gas station, beauty supply, bank - from CNN on the street, burned because of how they treated people - m'kay. So now they have tons of carbon and hazmat particulates all over the entire neighborhood for their children to breathe. Lovely.
That's just foolish.
The National Guard isn't a fast reaction SWAT team all suited up and waiting on hot standby ready to move out within minutes.
You’re not answering my questions! There is a city police department that is more than capable of handling these events. Why immediately call out the Guard? It shows weakness and absolves the leftist Democratic MOORE and city council of responsibility.
Charlie Manson is laughing.
Mayor not Moore
If they destroy the city, it will be on Barret’s ass. Walker offered assistance.
