BRASILIA, Brazil - The United States was eliminated by Sweden in Olympic women's soccer quarterfinal after a penalty shoot-out Friday.
The U.S. team, which is the reigning World Cup champions, had been favored to get to the gold medal showdown -- but are instead out in the round of 8.
The Friday match was a stunning loss for the U.S. team, which has played in the final every year since women's soccer became an Olympic sport in 1996, winning gold four times.

Baseball and softball will be Olympic sports in 2020.
Why in the world are they bringing back baseball?
They had a hissy fit and dropped it years ago because MLB refused to halt their season and allow top-tier players to compete in the Olympics. Can’t imagine they changed their minds on that.
Can’t blame the Swedish females for playing so hard.
Anything to keep from having to go back home any sooner than they have to.
More importantly, Kim Rhode won her sixth medal in six games in skeet shooting, becoming the first woman to win medals in six consecutive olympic games.
Probably because there’s a lot of other countries playing it. And really given that the IOC is generally looking for sports America isn’t good at if the MLB keeps their players out that helps the goal.
