Italy fears "another Calais" on its border with France as desperate migrants and refugees are thwarted in their bid to cross the frontier and reach northern Europe.
Tighter border controls by the French authorities have created a bottleneck around the Italian town of Ventimiglia, just a few miles from the French border.
The Italians are trying to transfer migrants and refugees to reception centres in other parts of the country in order to prevent the development of ramshackle camps such as the notorious 'Jungle' in Calais and the tent village that sprung up earlier this year at Idomeni, along the border between Greece and Macedonia.
"Our border with France will not become another Calais," Angelino Alfano, the Italian interior minister, told La Repubblica newspaper.

It took a long time for Europe to reach this point of vulnerability and neutrality. It’s going to take a long time to stop or reverse the flow of all these unwanted people.
They are largely unwanted by the native citizens, but one almost cannot blame the immigrants for wanting to escape a hometown that is being bombed everyday. Somebody or certain organizations are encouraging this. Certain non-profits continue to fan the flames of chaos based on false promises.
Italy needs to stop them before they land in Sicily.
Give them two choices, either a flight back home, or a flight to the new Auschwitz branch located in the delightful Italian countryside, downwind of everything.

Europe is in the same position Rome was when the Germanic tribes flowed in from the north; there was simply not enough people to resist them.
