Alvaro Ybarra Zavala puts it bluntly: Venezuela has become hell.
The photographer had just returned from one of his latest trips to the South American nation when he talked to TIME, and he was visibly affected by the chaos he had witnessed there. Theres a complete collapse of society, he said.
Once an example for the continent, Venezuela is now a country in freefall. Its hard to find food, theres no medicine, said Ybarra Zavala. If you have to have surgery, you need to bring everything with you: the bandages, the gloves, everything. There are no anesthetics.
Ybarra Zavala was on assignment for TIME last month, chronicling the countrys breakdown. His photographs show daily street protests that are often violently repressed, empty shelves in deserted grocery stores and people lining up, sometimes for entire days, for gas. No one believes anymore in the army, in the police, in the system, said Ybarra Zavala.
The photographer - whos worked in Iraq, Afghanistan and Colombia - said Venezuela is the hardest place Ive worked in.
The collapse, set in motion by Hugo Chavezs 14-year reign, now seems irreversible, he adds: For the last four years, Venezuela has been in constant crisis and it never blew up. But now, Im very scared of how it will end. I think Venezuela crossed the line of no return. Im worried what will happen next.

How many American actors and Democrat politicians praised Hugo Chavez? Many.
Unless they swim to Chula Vista they are going to have a hard time getting to the US. No airline is accepting Bolivars as payment anymore. American has something like US $300MM tied up in unrepatriable funds from VZ.
The oil price is partially true but in fact VZ produces a high sulphur content oil that is difficult to refine and nobody wants.
>what is the alternative?...seriously..
Monarchy is much better system for those who cannot govern themselves. Most of Latin America’s problems could be fixed by having local lords who govern thier poor people effectively.
Why are we in this handbasket and where are we going?
Well said
Globalists are looking on with anticipation. They are really waiting for America to do the same then they can easily put the world under one “big brother” umbrella. Americans will then truly miss our “One Nation Under God.”
Just look at how bad it is, we have an open criminal winning half the votes--someone who literally stole her candidacy and used her high status position to line her bank account.
A lottery system would be preferable to this.
They ARE STILL frothing and chomping at the bit to go after "the rich".
So, the theory that it'll get so bad, they'll come to their senses does not prevail. Ever.
I've read that the only refinery in the world that can process this oil is in the US.
starving folks, collapsing societies, they will find their way to our shore..sadly we are collapsing as well
