Less than 100 days before the general election, Donald Trump has still not spent a dime on television advertising, even as Hillary Clinton floods the airwaves with tens of millions of dollars in ad spending.
According to an analysis by NBC News, the Democratic presidential nominee's campaign has spent $52 million on television ads, many of which have been concentrated in the battleground states that will be critical in determining the outcome of the election.
The Trump campaign, by comparison, has spent zero dollars. Even the two third-party presidential candidates, Green Party nominee Jill Stein and Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson, have outspent Trump, the GOP nominee. Steins campaign has spent $189,000, while Johnsons campaign has spent $15,000.
When outside groups are factored in, Clinton's advantage over Trump grows to $91 million to $8.2 million in TV ad spending.
The largest pro-Clinton super-PAC, Priorities USA, has spent $37 million.
Meanwhile, the largest pro-Trump super-PAC, Rebuilding America Now, has spent $5 million. The National Rifle Association has spent $3.2 million in TV advertising for Trump.
The Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment
His campaign has released several ads but has only pushed them on social media so far.
It's not for lack of money the Trump campaign raised $80 million in July and finished the month with $37 million on hand.
A report in National Journal released Monday found that the campaign has requested ad rates in 17 states, taking the first step in what could be an expanded presence on the airwaves.
What’s he doing with the money I’ve been sending?
You’ve been a Trump Eeyore for quite some time, haven’t you? :)
Summer is still in full swing and most television watchers are busy with summery stuff, especially those who live where summer actually ends! He’d be wiser to put the ads on once the new television season begins, kids are back in school, and so on. Just my two cents.
Very good points.
Trump is doing just fine doing what he’s doing.
Why don’t you have some faith in Trump and his team? Maybe they know exactly what they are doing. They got this far running things the way they want to, I’d be willing to give them the benefit of the doubt about their current strategy.
I’m sure that’s why hillary has at least a triple-digit, or possibly quadruple-digit, leads in all of the the polls. Oh, wait...
Honestly, I haven’t watched any television - besides what has been playing in the background at some bars - in the last month.
Me neither.
Most people just zap past the ads anyway.
I think older people especially watch it. Trump should be putting on positive ads highlighting some of his iconic business achievements.
“Summer is still in full swing and most television watchers are busy with summery stuff,”
Not the case in Florida. Regardless, Clinton is running ads 7/24 on all the cable stations. You can’t remote your way away from them. In Tampa Bay the ads have been running for 10 weeks. Just saw a new one on the ID channel?? Last night, at 1 am ads were running on reruns of King of Queens.
There are 5 different ads that they rotate on every channel, so the average viewer will see a “new” ad regularly. The ads all use Trump’s own words and all are Trump’s worst moments in the campaign.
Anybody who thinks that these ads are not having an impact, doesn’t know much about elections. Positive campaign ads work a little.....attack ads work a lot!
Manafort knows what he’s doing. Why waste money on TV ads during the 2-week socialist love fest that’s going on right now in Rio.
So maybe he's determined that spending money on TV ads before Labor Day is a waste of money because women's beach volleyball is much more important to most normal people, and they're going to the bathroom or getting a beer when the ads come on TV anyway.
No doubt the MSM is not happy about this, because it comes out of their pockets.
He's either a marketing genius or he's crazy. (If he's crazy and still accomplished as much as he has, it gives hope to the rest of us.)
(BTW, he's hired the Brexit marketing gang.)
I saw 3 Trump ads on Fox Business last week in the span of about 15 minutes. IIRC, they were on just after the market close, which is an expensive time due to heavy viewership by investors and traders.
And you wonder why the Media is going nuts??
Trump’s candidacy is costing the Major Media outlets HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS in lost revenues!!!
He’s not my favorite - true. Not my first ( or second) choice - true. But I will vote for him, because Clinton is soooo much worse.
We cannot loose this election, and I fear that’s what Trump is doing.
The only pro Trump ad I have seen in the last 3 months is an ad called America Soaring about bringing back the steel industry and jobs. I think it’s a bit misplaced here in Florida.
I would like to see an ad showing how much money a middle class family would save under a Trump Presidency. Between tax cuts and rollback on regulations, he could make the case for a $3-4 thousand difference per year. That’s over $12,000 in his first term.
Florida has a huge middle class. Just because someone has $2 million in the bank doesn’t mean they are not middle class. Many have a monthly income of $4-5 thousand and would see the benefit very clearly.
If Trump waits too long to answer back, all this nonsense stated by the Democrats will become embedded as truth in the voters’ minds.
That is what happened to Bush in 1992. He waited too late to start campaigning (he waited until after Labor Day) and answering the propaganda of Bill Clinton.
George W Bush NEVER answered the Democrats and the Democrats are believed to this day. Bush wanted to set a new tone. He did; he paved the way for Obama.
The GOP does it’s spending towards the end of the election cycle, while the Democrats spend most of their money early.
Most people aren’t even paying attention to the election.
