'White Trash' — The Original Underclass
ProPublica ^ | Aug. 5, 2016 | Alec MacGillis

Posted on 08/06/2016 3:34:10 PM PDT by Mrs. Don-o

Sometime during the past few years, the country started talking differently about white Americans of modest means.

Early in the Obama era, the ennobling language of campaign pundits prevailed. There was much discussion of “white working-class voters,” with whom the Democrats, and especially Barack Obama, were having such trouble connecting. Never mind that this overbroad category of Americans — the exit pollsters’ definition was anyone without a four-year college degree, or more than a third of the electorate — obliterated major differences in geography, ethnicity, and culture. The label served to conjure a vast swath of salt-of-the-earth citizens living and working in the wide-open spaces between the coasts — Sarah Palin’s “real America” — who were dubious of the effete, hifalutin types increasingly dominating the party that had once purported to represent the common man.

The “white working class” connoted virtue and integrity. A party losing touch with it was a party unmoored.

That flattering glow has faded away. Today, less privileged white Americans are considered to be in crisis, and the language of sociologists and pathologists predominates. Charles Murray’s “Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960–2010” was published in 2012, and Robert D. Putnam’s “Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis” came out last year. From opposite ends of the ideological spectrum, they made the case that social breakdown among low-income whites was starting to mimic trends that had begun decades earlier among African Americans: Rates of out-of-wedlock births and male joblessness were rising sharply. Then came the stories about a surge in opiate addiction among white Americans, alongside shocking reports of rising mortality rates (including by suicide) among middle-aged whites. And then, of course, came the 2016 presidential campaign. The question was suddenly no longer why Democrats struggled to appeal to regular Americans. It was why so many regular Americans were drawn to a man like Donald Trump. Equally jarring has been the shift in tone. A barely suppressed contempt has characterized much of the commentary about white woe, on both the left and the right. Writing for National Review in March, the conservative provocateur Kevin Williamson shoveled scorn on the low-income white Republican voters who, as he saw it, were most responsible for the rise of Trump...

Huge cut. MUCH more in th article. Please read the whole thing.

I did not see the show but I bet it was not just calling himself white trailer trash I bet it was combined with using it as an excuse in the board room. using the term white trailer trash is as loaded as the word nigger. and if someone uses it to describe themselves it had better not be as an excuse for failure. as far as I am concerned it is best to just not use the term in anything but the informal between friends. Trump was using the forum of the tv show to recruit top notch talent and I think the last thing he wanted was for when things went wrong for his executive to call himself white trailer trash what he wanted was critical examinations for the cause of the failure and a plan not to repeat the same failure.

I do a lot of bartering with my buddies too.

Best deal I have gotten was a nice 30-30 for a few loads of firewood logs. (should have traded off the boat first though... dammit)

Try this

BTW, Floyd Radford, far right, was a classmate in junior high. Great guitar player. He also did time with Johnny Winter. Still plays occasionally with old band mates from Tin House (earlier band) at Tin House Ranch in Central Florida (Oviedo).

Well, as long as you didn’t use your fingernails.

Not all that bad while sitting in the cab of a $200-300,000 machine with climate control and a decent stereo.

In the white culture, we tend to call the different groups “Rich dad / poor dad”.

I have $80,000. Rick has $80,000.

I buy a parcel of land somewhere and slowly build a little vacation spot or SHTF plot or something.

Rick buys a 2016 Ford F350 Lariat.

All around town I bump into people who make more than I do (Tons more) and I also bump into hard working guys who do as their dad’s did and said: “Work hard and you’ll succeed”. These are great guys.

They have a nice truck.. but it’s a damned truck and I have a 16 year old used car.

Yeah, “they need it to...... haul / tow / work / blah blah”

But White Trash in my book is just “poor dad” stuff. I have the oldest car in my area, I wear used clothes from the salvation army and I rent a house. But I also own a software company and invest feverishly. Ya look at me, and I fit the description for white trash.

if I were smarter I woulda bought a pile of gold.

What the white underclass is missing is culture and, in some cases, a reasonable share of raw intelligence.

The two are not totally unrelated.

There have been a few liberals like Sargon of Akkad criticizing social justice warriors for saying all whites have privilege, demanding whites accept discrimination and guilt tripping for being white - and that the ones making these demands tend to be upper class elites who aren’t white men telling often poor lower class whites to shut up and be good little dhimmi/untouchables.
But unlike Islam, the lower class can’t change religions to get full rights, only self-flagellate a lot to gain tolerance of the new elites.
All based on an assignment of collective guilt for something few whites did (less than 2% had slaves), while denying the collective achievement of white men ending slavery for both blacks here and everyone else around the world.

“Scratch a conservative and you find someone who prefers the past over any future. Scratch a liberal and find a closet aristocrat. It’s true!

Liberal governments always develop into aristocracies. The bureaucracies betray the true intent of people who form such governments. Right from the first, the little people who formed the governments which promised to equalize the social burdens found themselves suddenly in the hands of bureaucratic aristocracies. Of course, all bureaucracies follow this pattern, but what a hypocrisy to find this even under a communized banner.”

Dinesh D’Souza does a great piece in “Hillary’s America” showing how Democrats north and south both supported slavery, and no Republicans north or south owned slaves. But the myth that the racists became Republicans in the 1970s-1980s let Democrats smear them as the racist party. Reality, less than 1% of Democrat officials EVER changed parties, while the Democrats continued to support Jim Crow and later welfare as enforced dependency.

I don’t think so, because after that he said he still had to fire the person responsible for the loss, he just didn’t want to hire anyone who would call himself “white trash”. Here’s the clip, judge for yourself.

ProPublica and Wsj have a few connections.

ProPublica has attracted attention for the salaries it pays its employees.[17][18] In 2008, Paul Steiger, the editor of ProPublica, received a salary of $570,000.[19] Steiger was formerly the managing editor at the Wall Street Journal, where his total compensation (including options[19]) was double that at ProPublica.[20] Steiger’s stated strategy is to use a Wall Street Journal pay model to attract journalistic talent.[21] In 2010, eight ProPublica employees made more than $160,000, including managing editor Stephen Engelberg ($343,463) and the highest-paid reporter, Dafna Linzer, formerly of the Washington Post ($205,445).[22]

A guy I know received a White Trash Barbie for Christmas some years ago. Funny little sayings came with it, something about “I’m drinkin’ for two.”
