You see, the Iranians were suing for funds deposited with the Pentagon in 1979 for a weapons purchase that was later blocked when the ayatollahs deposed the Shah. The $400 million wasn't a ransom; it was simply the first installment of a $1.7 billion dollar settlement of that dispute. "We would not, we have not, we will not pay ransom to secure the release of U.S. citizens," top White House flack Josh Earnest insisted. That the money was delivered to coincide with the release of our hostages is little more than a funny coincidence.

Actually, if it were ransom, that would at least have a positive side. I believe that the vast majority of the “misplaced” money was “misplaced” into Hitlery’s pocket. Either directly or via the Clinton Crime Foundation. What didn’t go there, went to various liberal causes, in particular Hitlery’s presidential campaign.

I think there are three issues here.
First, it was roughly 2 billion dollars held by the US since the fall of the Shah’s gov’t and the original hostage crisis. At some point, we had to release the money. To have allowed this to continue on...for decades? It was stupid. It’s not US money....just Iranian money which was sitting in US banks.
Second, if the money had transferred by wire....US bank to Iranian bank....then this would have been a open and transparent process. To go and sneak four hundred million out of some bank....load it on a pallet and fly it somewhere....you look like a money-laundering operation or a mafia-thug unit. This was one-star government ethics at work.
Third, I’d go and grab a dozen Americans tomorrow if I were the Iranians and get the WH to deliver more cash. Whoever it was in the WH staff who recommended this stupid maneuver....ought to be fired. My humble guess is that it’s the same guy who advocated Bergdahl’s release, which also involved cash (anyone forgetting the deal, go back and review how that worked).
