PROTECTION ISLAND — Jim Hayward slips on a hard hat and pops open an umbrella before stepping into a storm of angry gulls.

Hayward, a seabird biologist based on Protection Island in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, is making his evening rounds through the largest gull nesting colony in the Puget Sound region. He's been monitoring this site since 1987, so he's used to the shrieking, the divebombing, the frequent splatterings of gull poop, and the pecking at his head, hands and feet.

What he's not accustomed to is the cannibalism.

I don't know if it is the assertion that scientists know what the ocean was like for the last 10,000 years, or why overpopulated animals resort to eating each others spawn, like this is new in nature. I always was taught that a warmer than normal year results in population growth in certain species, then a die off when colder times. Cute little penguins even eat each other if the egg is left alone You read and reply to the new bit of insanity.

There has been no significant change in the Earth's Climate going back as far as reliable quantitative measurements have been available.

All climate fluctuations and variations have been within the statistical margin of measurement error.

If sea gulls are adapting their behavior, the adoption is in response to seem other environmental factor, not “global warming” or even the new catch all phrase “climate change”

The article is grayed out for me.

Really driven by morbid curiosity. The whole critter effected by climate change style of study seems like a scam to get money to me...

If one were to magically have complete and detailed data about the temperature of that area for the last 10,000 years, it might tell one the effect that local climate might have on the critters. Lets call this Super Local Dataset A.

Now consider that suddenly all the world's other temp data disappears...poof. But you still have everything you need to know about local area A where this island is.

One thing you could not even tell, is if the average temp of the entire planet was higher or lower, or pretty much anything about it.

And yet, you would have all the data relevant to the how temp effects the critters.

Now let us suppose you do not have any detailed data about the local climate. Your dataset A goes poof. But suddenly you have a magical unicorn that delivers a single set of data showing global average tempeture for the last 10,000 years. No break down to local areas, just everything averaged together.

How does this average temp effect these creatures.

If you think you can tell...then you sir, are too stupid to do science. Try something simpler.

Hey, the guy has been studying the effect of global warming on sea gulls even before global warming was global,warming so he must be onto something.

I personal theory is that zombie sea gulls are pursuing an uncontrollable hunger for living sea gull brains. But that theoretical explanation is a little to technical and rigorously scientific compared to most climate change theories currently in vogue with the global warming scientific community.

That does not, however, minimize the serious threat zombie sea gull pose to the future of the world.

Given the seriousness of the threat, I think that irresponsible and narrow minded zombie seal gull deniers should be prosecuted and sent to jail.
