Donald Trump Sets Conditions for Defending NATO Allies Against Attack (Praises Erdogan!)
New York Times ^ | JULY 20, 2016 | By DAVID E. SANGER and MAGGIE HABERMAN

Posted on 07/21/2016 5:02:26 AM PDT by Eurotwit

For example, asked about Russia’s threatening activities that have unnerved the small Baltic States that are among the more recent entrants into NATO, Mr. Trump said that if Russia attacked them, he would decide whether to come to their aid only after reviewing whether those nations “have fulfilled their obligations to us.”

Mr. Trump had nothing but praise for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the country’s increasingly authoritarian but democratically elected leader. “I give great credit to him for being able to turn that around,” Mr. Trump said of the coup attempt on Friday night. “Some people say that it was staged, you know that,” he said. “I don’t think so.”

Asked if Mr. Erdogan was exploiting the coup attempt to purge his political enemies, Mr. Trump did not call for the Turkish leader to observe the rule of law, or Western standards of justice. “When the world sees how bad the United States is and we start talking about civil liberties, I don’t think we are a very good messenger,” he said.

Just like he didn’t praise Saddam Hussein for the way he treated terrorist in Iraq.

Does Trump even know or care that the Turkish constitution gives the military the right and power to over throw the government for the specific purposes of keeping the country from turning into a Muslim controlled government.

What makes you think the coup leaders were actually Gulenists and not Erdog’s peeps stirring up?

Have you read the gigantic numbers of purged/detained/fired citizens in Turkey? Miltiary, finance, news of course, teachers, deans, judges (pretty much all of them in the country), torture, “trials” with no lawyers and the “guilty” wounded, beaten, forced “confessions” - enemies list pre-made? Last number I saw was 70,000, and prevented from leaving the country.

Erdog’s vision is the new Caliphate with himself as annointed and prophezied calith.

Well, with Ircilik base locked down with no power, how are they going to fight ISIS? Erdog’s top ISIS fighting commander was murdered a few days ago. Erdog helps ISIS, he has no desire to fight them. His son buys the black market oil from ISIS and sells it, makes a fortune. Erdog’s going pedal to the metal jihad-dictator.

The NY Times headline is still correct.

And so is the comment appended (although I hate comments added to the titles, fwiw).

After reading the longer version, it seems clear that Mr. Trump is putting conditions on the circumstances in which the U.S. would assist NATO allies. That's a legitimate position to take, and I understand why many are agreeing. It seems consistent with his general perspective on world events.

Also consistent with his general perspective on world events is the praise of a vicious dictator simply because he is successful in holding onto power. There have been other examples of this.

Finally, there's his contention that, because the United States is so "bad," there is no basis on which to condemn Turkey's version of "civil liberties." I completely disagree with this.

Thank you for posting the transcript. I have not seen one MSM article that did not cherry pick quotes, leave out the important parts so as to mislead, quote without context, “paraphrase” so as to mislead, or just flat out lie.

TURKEY: Deputy PM says country to suspend European Convention on Human Rights for a while - @CNNTURK_ENG

I believe the deputy PM may have been the one urging the cutting off of ears of "suspected" Gulenists, just for context. If it wasn't the dep. PM, it was the head of Erdog's party.

what “permanent war?” Even for as bad as Iraq/Afghanistan are, those pale in comparison to wars like Vietnam in terms of lives lost, and money spent vs. America’s operations to end the Bolshevik Evil Empire.

God gave the world America to usher in an age a relative peace, prosperity, and freedom. His grace wanted us then and wants us now to spread freedom’s seed.

Trump reignites conservative concerns about his foreign policy views

Trump insists that he loves America, but does he respect our country? When he equates our conduct with that of vicious authoritarians and/or claims that our troubles deprive us of moral authority on the world stage, it makes me wonder.

NATO certainly needs a reform and obama-clintoon are completly out of touch when they want to make a revival of the “cold war” .
RUSSIA is no more USSR and the FIRST ENNEMY of the “free world” is now the so-called islamism !

About ERDOGAN ; i think that TRUMP should correct quickly his stance since ERDOGNAN , as an islamic tyran , is one of our ENNEMIES , a part of our problem ....

BTW Merkel , the german pm , is playing the nice friend with TURKEY ( reminds the turkish-german alliances of WW1 and 2 ).... while ERDOGAN is fooling the european dhimmies

>>>And unwilling to help those who refuse to meet their obligations is the very heart of reciprocal exchange. This is just common sense.

So if on Jan 21, 2017, Putin rolls his tanks into the Baltics, do we defend Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania who may not be meeting their obligations as viewed by Trump?

I was stunned to see the complaisant ERDOGAN’s interview on CNN just after the failed “coup”.
obama-clinton were guilty ERDOGAN’s accomplice !
TRUMP should slam then again about that

Huuuuh slow down folk .
Do you equate , on your side , USA and obama-clinton’s disastrous foreign policy .
You are right to wonder . And if you really wonder , and are not an anti-TRUMP troll , you should see that , yes , USA are in big trouble today . TIME TO WAKE UP and make a little bit of self-examination sometimes .

Watching CNN from France it’s disgusting to see how your medias are owned ( lot of ads from Dubai , Qatar , Saudi Arabia ....) and partial ....
And there is NO DEMOCRACY without free and fair information...( and i didn’t talk about Facebook , Google , Microsoft and the Hollywood machine ....)

He didn’t praise Erdogan. He merely acknowledged his effectiveness in stopping a coup.

BINGO.

Some Freepers need to stop being so reactionary and understand Trump-Language.

Indeed, pretty much took what he said and paraphrased him - badly. The worst he said is he hopes Turkey will fight ISIS. yeah...I think he better keep on hoping because that is not going to happen.

Lessen to me. Ignore the headlines - always.

It read like a free flowing conversation.

Trump need to be more thoughtful about what he says, now when he is the candidate.

Afterall he might rule the most powerful nation in the world in just a few months.

His words matter now.

Time for joking and messing around is over.
