The Hostage Air Base – and Its Hydrogen Bombs
American Thinker ^ | July 20, 2016 | Stephen D. Bryen and Shoshana Bryen

The United States runs its air operations against ISIS in Iraq from Incirlik Air Base in Turkey. The base, used by other NATO forces as well, is not American. It is Turkish, and the U.S. needs government permission to fly from there. Since the 15 July coup attempt in Ankara, U.S. forces at Incirlik are essentially hostages to the Turkish government. The Turkish base commander and his aides have been arrested; U.S. personnel are confined to base; outside power has been cut off; and while the U.S. has been permitted to resume operations over Iraq and Syria, it is working under adverse conditions, to say the least. Most worrisome, about 50 hydrogen bombs are stored by the U.S. at Incirlik, ostensibly on behalf of NATO. These bombs are "protected" by Turkish troops and to some degree their potential use is shared with the Turkish Air Force.

The deployment goes back more than 50 years, begun as an effort to counter the Soviet military buildup as an offset to quantitatively larger Soviet ground forces facing Europe. But by the mid-1980s the U.S. put more emphasis on "tactical" missiles, largely to counter the Soviet Union's deployment of SS-20's, a short to medium range missile with multiple, independently targeted warheads (MIRV) in the second and third versions of the SS-20. In 1987 the Intermediate and Short-range Missile Nuclear Treaty (INF) was signed and the Russians and the U.S. began removing their missiles. By 1991, all the missiles of concern on both sides were eliminated.

I saw that demonstrated during flight operations with Phantom jets on the Saratoga back in ‘64 or ‘65. It was called “over the shoulder” bombing. Sort of like throwing a hand grenade back over your shoulder while sprinting away as hard as you can.

I can't imagine an American Administration would be stupid (or wicked) enough to let 50 H-Bombs fall into the hands of an Islamic Caliphate.

Oh, wait...

This administration has zero credibility with most Americans with an IQ above room temperature.

It is unlikely the Turks are going to believe anything Kerry says.

Just thinking, Obama wouldn’t mind so much if Turkey took possession of those bombs.

Any innovative scenarios where these could be used in a pre-planned nuclear world war 3?

Inasmuch as it's a high probability that Erdogan incited or faked the coup to be able to clean house of 60k+ of his political adversaries, it seems likely he's got further designs that need to be anticipated.

Let's not forget how quickly Barry said we should all support Erdogan, who's long envisioned himself as the Caliph.

So what does it need to shoot one of these off.

A PAL system. Hopefully they have the PALs rigged with C4 just in case Erdogen gets ISIS to raid the WSAs....with Obama's permission.

Enter the code for the permissive action link incorrectly a few consecutive times and the device is rendered non functional. It would take a complete reassembly.

....they should enter the codes 1 less than the maximum today. We can always ship "dead" nukes back to Pantex who can get them up an running in a couple of months. I'd rather have 50-60 nukes deadlined than ISIS get ahold of one plutonium core.

Beyond that I can’t talk about it.

LOL, works for me, the less I know the less I can be accused of. Thank you very much for the information you could share though. It sounds like we might have enough safe guards to lessen, significantly, the possibility of it being used against us.

This is incorrect. WSAs are AF Pax only, along with NNSA/OST sometimes and civilian technicians from Pantex plant occasionally. I have NEVER seen anyone inside a WSA, foreign soil or not without a TS/SCI from DoD or a Q clearance from DOE. Never.

I hope this is incorrect. If Turks are inside the WSA, NNSA/OST would mow them down if they tried anything. That is a high-speed dedicated bunch. I'd rather piss off a bar full of Navy SEALs than mess with OST inside a WSA.

If Russia were to bomb the vaults holding the B61 weapons would it result in nuclear detonation of those weapons?

NO. Our nukes can't go off unless properly armed by NCA. Proper criticality of a nuclear explosion is a VERY complicated an precise series of events. Interrupt one and nothing happens.....C4 might go off, but not the nukes. It would be messy, but not atomic or thermonuclear by any means.

Erdogan just extended state of emergency for 3 months. Not done yet apparently.

They should have been gone more than 10 years ago. When Turkey wouldn’t support us on the Iraq invasion, Dubya should have pulled them out.

OSINT I have seen says they were gone from Ataxos and Incirlik in 2003, but then again, NO ONE talks about where/how many nukes are that has 2 brain cells working. I assume some are there, but only about 500 people on the planet can confirm it, and I ain't one of them.

Solution? Any?

Move F22 to Cyprus for aircover. Send in 5 B2s, 2-3 B1s, or 1-2 B52 to load them on and take off and hope to make it 10 miles off of Turkey before Turks realize what's going on. Hard to miss a US bomber pulling up to the WSA loading pad though.

If you see/hear of C17s/C130s taking off with US dependents and landing at RAF Akrotiri, Avino, or Ramstein, you know shit is about to hit the fan.

It is a weird way to ‘loft’ a bomb, but apparently they could obtain reasonable accuracy even though it looked there was no way that was possible.”

Yep. Two methods of gravity nukes being delivered:

Lay down method

Lobbing or "over the shoulder" method.

Note: WE 177 was UK gravity nuke similar to our B61.

It takes 45 minutes to get a nuke to the ME via an ICBM....

Lot less than that once NCA gives them to DoD.

An SLBM in the Indian Ocean can hit most ME targets in <15 minutes.

Can we use them across the Middle East hotspots, including Turkey, and call it a day?

I have it from a more than reasonably good source that this is still largely accurate.

Besides; how damn 'accurate' does a nuke need to be??

"Almost" only counts in horseshoes, hand grenades and nukes.
