Melania Trump’s highly anticipated speech at the Republican National Convention Monday night appears to have nearly copied a paragraph from Michelle Obama’s speech at the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

A college kid can’t turn a paper in and get away with copying anything.
They feed it through a website to match it against other things that are written to detect if something was copied.
That’s been around for quite awhile now.

Hard to believe that a speech of this profile could have had this happen.
Move on and don’t do it again.

this story was a prewritten by the media, they were just going to insert the “issue”.

The idiot media is graciously putting up pictures of melania next to michelle.

The gazelle vs the sow.

I don’t think the use of a paragraph from another speech is a big deal in and of itself, BUT:

They took MICHELLE OBAMA’S? Seriously? Of all people to crib from? Why were they using her speech as a template at ALL?

And it was STUPID. This ISN’T a college paper. The stupidity bothers me more than the cribbing.

Melania: "From a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life: that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise; that you treat people with respect. They taught and showed me values and morals in their daily life.”

Michelle: “And Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you're going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don't know them, and even if you don't agree with them.”

So, the "key phrases" the author of this drivel is in a tizzy about are common American idioms for being an upstanding individual. Lisa Hagen is a twit, and relies on Barack's former speechwriter as her "authoritative" source that this is a big issue.

Melania stated, apparently, that she wrote the speech with little outside help. Which means that these stock phrases, rather than being scribed by a professional writer, were selected by the speaker herself.

Any bets on whether Michelle wrote her own speech?

You say it’s obvious plagiarism, but I disagree. Assuming Melania is telling the truth, she wrote her own speech with minimal assistance. That means that she would have had to have been aware of Michelle’s speech and to have copied it - despite the fact that the phrases in question are common aphorisms.

How many ways are there to state you were taught to work hard, that you keep your word, etc. These platitudes are common phrases, not rhetorical crescendo.

Nobody but nobody in the political field writes their own speeches.

People do seem to forget that Donald is not a professional politician, and Melania is not a professional politician's wife.

You have cited a primary rule for pro pols/pol wives. Trump has spent his entire campaign standing the traditional political rules on their head.

I would also state that the media is having an orgasm over this snippet of platitudes because it allows them to ignore the substance of the speech and the stage presence of the lady giving it.

1) Melania didn’t write the speech. 2) both were about the same things—so naturally the wording is close. 3) the DNC/Hillary people were quick to condemn the talk—like they knew in advance. 4) might have been done on purpose—A few bucks (or thousands of them) to the speech writer and we have an instant controversy.

Do you suddenly feel compelled to talk about Donald Trump?

Do you suddenly have an insatiable urge to learn more about what Donald Trump has said or done, now?

Has the thought crossed your mind that Donald Trump has “finally done it” and that the media will crucify him now!

well... you've just been TRUMPED!

You say you don't feel compelled to talk about Donald Trump, while... talking about Donald Trump...

You say you don't have the insatiable urge to learn more about Donald Trump... but you probably are watching news coverage of the “plagiarism”, may have watched the entire Melania speech that you may have originally missed, and are now going out of your way to make posts about the whole incident on Internet message boards...

You say that the thought hasn't crossed your mind that Donald Trump has finally done it and that the media isn't savaging him... while arguing that someone screwed up and Trump would never have intentionally created this media firestorm...

You've been TRUMPED!

ROFL

(the best con is the one where the victim doesn't know they have been conned)

And the priceless part from my perspective is... a LOT of people have figured it out... but STILL fall for it, day after day!!!

ROFL!

I tried to highlight the controversial lines. It seems like boiler plate valedictorian material IMHO
----------------------

Here’s the quote from Melania’s speech:

“From a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life, that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise, that you treat people with respect,”

Melania Trump said in her speech.

“They taught and showed me morals in their daily life. That is the lesson that I continue to pass along to our son. And we need to pass those lessons on to many generations to follow because we want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.”

And from Michelle Obama in 2008:
“... Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you’re going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don’t know them, and even if you don’t agree with them,” Obama said,

according to a transcript. “And Barack and I set out to build lives guided by these values, and pass them on to the next generation. Because we want our children — and all children in this nation — to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.”

Judge for yourselves.

You said:

<< This will be Trump’s justification to go the distance on SATANIZING Bill who is his opponent’s spouse. Turnabout is fair play. Historically this is how Trump picks fights. He has done this at least 17 times in the last 12 months that I can put together. His tactic: Get the opposition to throw the first punch that fails to fully connect... then cave their face in... with no mercy. >>

That’s a plausible analysis, one that fits with the yr-long pattern we’ve seen as Donald systematically took out his opponents: Dance around the edges until he is attacked, then unload both barrels on his rival. Except this time with Hillary it’s a little more complex because the media protects her so well. If he can justify inclusion of the spouses, he can parade all the sexual assault victims who must be begging to help him bury this Clinton Crime Family.

(If I’m not mistaken in my timeline, that’s how he brought in Ted’s wife, by defending his wife’s honor after the modeling photo of Melania was used. I don’t remember who published the photo but Donald sure didn’t waste time responding, did he? Am I remembering the sequence accurately?)

I’ll even take it one step further: Donald himself wrote her speech and planted the phrases in there, with Melania’s consent. Think about it: Would Donald J Trump trust some hired speech writer for such a crucial job? No way, no how; not in a million years. When I listened to her speech, I even listened to it with that thought the entire time — “Let’s see what Donald wrote about himself.” I had wanted a speech peppered with at least a few personal, intimate anecdotes about their personal life, as did half of America. That’s what women do: We emotionalize things, especially when we want to brag on our loved ones. But there were no anecdotes because men, especially The Donald, don’t usually do that.

Depending on how this plays out, I predict Donald will officially begin the Hildabeast dehumanizations process on Thursday night, even if it’s mild. If nothing else, he has set up a situation where half the world will be tuned in to see if he defends his wife’s honor.

Go ahead, CNN and fellow Clinton knee pad sycophants. Talk about this for the next 3 days. Make our day!

I wish I had a dollar for every time in the past year I’ve heard the MSM complaining about being played, then go right back to being played. Lol!

See my response at 254. Donald is too smart to farm her speech out to amateurs. So if you can entertain the thought that he, Manafort, and Melania wrote it, then think outside the box and ask yourself “Why would they do this?”

Donald is a big/long-term thinker. Remember that. And despite his reputation for being “impulsive,” I’m convinced that’s a cover, at least to some extent. A useful analogy: The wise person never underestimates blondes, especially the ones who identify as female. And wise blonde females take delight when it happens; it makes it easier to reach the desired outcome. :-)

I am trying to be optimistic there is a plan ...

but given it is H. vs. D., the media is all in. Fortune, CNBC, Bloomberg are all leading with this story and not something like the big govt of H.

One more point: The MSM and some on this thread keep assuming that this “mistake” is unfortunate and “steps on a good news cycle.”

There would not have been a “good news cycle!” That’s a false premise that Donald fully understands by now. Last night could have been the BEST opening night of a political convention in the history of the USA but the MSM would have found SOMETHING to bitch about.

Rule 1: Make the MSM work FOR you instead of against you.

Melania spoke with pride and a smile about becoming a citizen.

Did Moochelle say anything like that? LOL!

Moochelle is a farce.

So if we go back and put MO’s speech under this type of scrutiny, wonder who we’ll find that she copied lines from?
