Paul Ryan Will Open the GOP Convention While Battling a Primary Challenge
fortune.com ^ | 7/17/16 | Jay Newton-Small

On Monday morning, House Speaker Paul Ryan will gavel in the 2016 Republican National Convention, which is expected to crown Donald Trump the GOP presidential nominee. That same day, $150,000 worth of television ads will begin airing in Ryan’s Wisconsin House district to support his reelection ahead of an Aug. 9 primary challenge from a self-described Trump acolyte.

Ryan isn’t the first speaker, or leader, to be in trouble. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor lost his seat in a surprise primary loss in Virginia in 2014. House Speaker Tom Foley, a Democrat, lost his reelection bid in 1994. But before that, you have to go back to 1862 for another example of an unseated Speaker.

“Our Wisconsin sources, both GOP and independent, have told us Ryan should be fine. I think that’s right, but I also recall being told that Eric Cantor would win in a walk in June 2014,” says Larry Sabato, head of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics. “With low primary turnouts you just never know.”

I would, but unfortunately I’m not in Ryan’s district. Ribble is my Congressman.

My God, why are they allowing a Democrat operative to open the convention? Oh that’s right, we no longer have a Republican party.

Not quite that good:

But while the Nehlen campaign’s internal polling claims a more than 30 point drop in Ryan’s lead, a new poll obtained exclusively by Independent Journal Review has Ryan leading Nehlen with 69% to Nehlen’s 20%. Just 11% remain undecided.

Ryan holds a 76% total favorability rating, while Nehlen is at 22% total favorability. In addition, 54% of likely voters in the district have no opinion of Nehlen, less than one month away from the primary.

http://ijr.com/2016/07/650794-paul-ryan-leads-primary-challenger-new-poll/

Paul Nehlen responds to those numbers:

The poll was commissioned by the Congressional Leadership Fund.

The president of the Congressional Leadership Fund is Mike Shields.

Shields is the former chief-of-staff to Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus.

Priebus and Paul Ryan are joined at the hip. They couldn’t be closer if they were Siamese twins.

Shields hired Harper Polling to conduct the poll.

The president of Harper Polling is Brock McCleary.

Now get this…

When Shields was Political Director of the National Republican Congressional Committee, McCleary was the organization’s Polling Director!

As I said, Ryan will probably be wary of these polls after Cantor was whipped by Brat. But unlike Cantor, he is going to campaign hard and in his district.

I want bouncers to deny him access to the convention.

Not hardly. He is the Chairman of the convention. He said that he would step down if Trump asked him to. Had that happened, Reince would have let the delegates loose to 'vote their conscience'.

As usual, Trump played his hand well.

In this one, he’s polling 69% to 20% with a 76% favorability rating. Clearly, either this poll or the poll you just posted is way, way off given how large the disparity is.

If he was, he wouldn’t be running tv ads.

Really? Politicians normally do run ads in the closing weeks / days of a campaign even if they only have token opposition. That's evidence of nothing in of itself.

This is Ryan’s life, he has future political aspirations, and he is going to fight for this. Nehlen is putting up a hell of a fight. It’s so hard to beat name recognition. Cantor was the gold standard, but how often do we manage to primary these big names?

This is my fantasy, Ryan getting the boot.

Though I guess they’d probably replace the speaker spot with someone as bad. Maybe I shouldn’t be so pessimistic.

Yes, if Ryan-o is not the Speaker in 2017, it will be someone equally bad.

Any chance that Paul Ryan will lose the primary?

This is one more establishment RINO who needs to lose his primary as badly as Cantor lost in his state. Paul Rino needs to be “CANORED”.

Ryan is toast. Sarah Palin has seen to that, as her PAC supports candidate Nehlen to oust Speaker traitor Ryan.
