I look to Obama to signal whether this is good or bad. If Obama is upset, it’s good.

It’s a the middle east, it’s always a mess. Erdogan sucks, but there’s a 612% chance that whoever overthrows him will also suck.

We are FOR it, and it is GOOD, because the more secular military is less Islamist than the corrupt politicians.

I don't know about "we", but I am FOR.

Reportedly, one of the first people Obama called on his ascension to the US Presidency was Erdogan. They've occasionally had their differences, but both are (IMHO) full-on Islamists.

Erdogan spent years replacing many of the top military officers with people he thought would be more loyal to him. And, so has Obama.

FOR!

In the past, it was the military that enforced secularism in Turkey, keeping the mullahs out of politics.

I have no idea if that is still true.

For. The Turkish military believes in a secular government, not sharia.

“are we for or against this?”

The military has historically been prowestern and against Islamic anything. However, Erdogan has been eliminating likely coup leaders since he has been in power. So, whether it is the same military as before him is up in the air.

Don’t know for sure but the President of Turkey was playing both sides against each other until the airport attack of a few weeks ago

Check out the history of Turkey, it was ONLY when the military controlled that the Feral Orthodox Muslims were kept under control! Frankly, I am somewhat surprised that their military (after a decade of "leadership purges") is still able to assume their traditional role in maintaining stability there!

Secular Turks are very good friends to have!

Think Egypt - after a move toward islamisization and seizing control over the institutions of government the Muslim Brotherhood’s Morsi was overthrown by military coup.

Same thing is happening here...

If it involves a large number of middle eastern Muslims, it is always, ALWAYS the worst news possible.

Unless, of course, the words "atomic bomb" and "Mecca" are being used in the same sentence. ;)

I think we should cheer the military in this case. It is the most westernized institution in Turkey and, prior to Erdogan, kept the crazy Muslim fanatics in their place.

The Turkish military may be doing this for several possible reasons: the military does not want Turkey to get booted out of NATO, does not want war with Russia which it would lose, the islamofascists under Erdogan may have been ready to pull the trigger on the restoration of an Ottoman style caliphate, or the civilian government was just overdue for a beat-down.

It appears to be good news.
Overthrow of an Islamist and return to a secular Turkish government.
