Deadly officer-involved shootings of two black men, one in Louisiana and another in Minnesota, have the attention of the country and that of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Sunday night, a group here in Memphis marched across the city and onto the I-40 bridge.
It started as a peaceful rally at FedExForum with hundreds of people.
After rallying at FedExForum, the crowd marched to police headquarters at 201 Poplar and then continued on, with more people joining them as they went on.
The marchers attempted to go to the I-40 bridge, but police blocked the entrance to the bridge. They eventually found a way onto the bridge via the exit ramp, and police had trouble stopping them.
Traffic was forced to a standstill, and the bridge was closed as police ordered the protesters to exit.
There was still a crowd of marchers who did not make it onto the bridge, as well as a big group still back at FedExForum.
There was a big police presence surrounding the rally and march, including a police helicopter and officers in tactical gear. Interim Police Director Michael Rallings was also at the rally, and things heated up when protestors interrupted him.
In the 1950s you were on the old bridge that was made of steel grates. You could see the water beneath.
Those muslims better get on the ball if they want to make a move in Memphis!
Memphis is one of those southern towns that blacks took over and destroyed.
I have white relatives who live in Memphis. They’re about as racist as they could be. But they love them some democrats and keep voting for them.
Truthfully I believe all who can afford to leave have left.
Congrats on getting out. One of my children lives in northern Mississippi (Oxford), and the growth south of Memphis has been amazing. DeSoto County (just below the state line) is filling up rapidly, and there has been a lot of construction over the past decade into Tate County as well. Same thing out east of Memphis (past Germantown and Collierville, into Fayette County) and north into Tipton County, where you moved.
The decline of Memphis has been sad, but utterly predictable. Entrust your city to the Democrats and watch it collapse in just a few decades.
So very true.
Fincher is not running so voting for his replacement for me is not a issue, Tom Leatherwood would make a great US Rep. Known him for years.
Kustoff and Lutterll are GOPe blue blood elite a little to liberal for me.
So tell me how to get from Nashville to Forrest City Arkansas again without going through Memphis?
Don’t be cheeky and say Dyersburg or Helena
And what’s wrong with Memphis?
Try specifics
How do you go around Memphis
Two bridges
40 and the old one 55
Ain’t no going around Memphis except Dyersburg north or Helena siuth
Both way out the way
I drive it monthly
Never gonna happen
Anymore than the moderate Muslim myth
Islam is wedded to a philosophy, that is its nature. Black doesn’t “have” to be.
1800% more chance a cop dies from a black man than a black man dying from a cop.
How many of these prepared for life and have the education or skills to be either employed or to even form a successful family?
This is just like schizophrenics no matter what believing THE WORLD BUT NEVER THEMSELVES ARE ALWAYS COMPLETELY CRAZY; reality need not apply ever.
How many white people won’t also step outside of their own assumptions? We end up with a perpetual shouting match of “Forever lazy bums!” “Forever heartless people!” and nobody wins.
Any group will take the greivance yoke if offered it appears
I’d actually argue a higher percentage of USA blacks support greivance politics than do Muslims support Daesh or Wahabbism
But yes its changeable
In my youth during whites with spine blacks were much better behaved
If whites grow a pair again maybe they will behave better again
Call it tough love if one likes
But it’s not just blacks
It’s any minority
I am having a lazy day & lounging on the couch w/ our adopted shelter dog of 2 days. It’s like she’s been w/ us forever.
I digress. I used to love going to Oak Court mall. We used to meet friends in midtown. On holidays & Halloween they had homeless & teens come asking for food & trick or treating. They have 2 girls & it scared them, they eventually moved. My friend Karen wanted me to go to the Memphis Botanic garden, I said no & so did her other friends.
I have grown (or lived out of) my Kumbiyah phase. I think the hatred of whites is at an all time high in Memphis & other cities. It’s not worth putting my life in danger or getting caught up in the middle of some protest. This former liberal thinks BLM is a hate group. Where we live in north MS is wonderful w/ lots going on. I will meet my friend in Collierville & go the back way which is really pretty. You make choices in life, that’s mine. Being in Asheville/Black Mountain for 16 days recently was wonderful. A good vibe.
As for getting somewhere, you’re on your own. ; )
I’m going to hazard a guess & say you wanted my definitive 3rd paragraph answer.........
