Venezuela’s democratic façade has completely crumbled (Hugo Chavez's Long Con)
Washington Post ^ | 7/1/16 | Moisés Naim and Francisco Toro

Posted on 07/10/2016 6:14:45 AM PDT by doghorse

Not long ago, the regime that Hugo Chávez founded was an object of fascination for progressives worldwide, attracting its share of another-world-is-possible solidarity activists. Today, as the country sinks deeper into the Western Hemisphere’s most intractable political and economic crisis, the time has come to ask some hard questions about how this regime — so obviously thuggish in hindsight — could have conned so many international observers for so long.

Funny how the article never cites socialism as the cause of Venezuela’s problems.

That would be some bias or ignorance on the part of the author.
I think we all know the "cause" of their problems: unmitigated greed.
A few wealthy families own MOST of the third world sewers' lands, money, militaries and governments.

The seven deadly sins: pride/arrogance, greed, anger, envy, lust, gluttony and sloth. THEY provide the answers...that and a lot of work from Satan and his minions.

... the time has come to ask some hard questions about how this regime — so obviously thuggish in hindsight — could have conned so many international observers for so long.

Give me a break. This is easily answered with a single image and a Caption that reads: "Our Hero" that summarizes perfectly for me the mindset of all liberals and certainly the referred to "international observers". These people foolishly believe in the nonsense written by this Economic Idiot.

This is the washington post? Great Scott! There’s hope yet. On a side note, the gun club down the street is ultrabusy this morning.

Wasn’t Stalin photoshopped into that heir-apparent pose with the dying Lenin?

What to know about communism:

1) communism is a pack of lies.

2) communists are liars.

You can just as well substitute socialism or progressivism.

“Wasn’t Stalin photoshopped into that heir-apparent pose with the dying Lenin?”

I don’t think so. Lenin wasn’t able to say much of anything so Stalin just kind of photobombed himself into it. Photo retouching back then was mostly limited to airbrushing “nonpersons” out of photos, not seamlessly inserting people into them. Not that I’m an expert or anything.

I'm not talking about the fools in his own country. I'm talking about the same people the article is: the so-called intellectual elite who for some unfathomable reason believed that THIS time, socialism was going to work.

They didn't learn then, and they still won't learn. If they had, Bernie Sanders couldn't get elected treasurer of the neighborhood beautification project, let alone be a serious candidate for the presidency.

The “working class” wasn’t conned, at least not for long. That’s where the thugs come in. The “intellectuals” still seem to be buying the con.

We do know that Trotsky was Lenin’s chosen successor and that Lenin regarded Stalin as dangerous. True enough.

In some doctored photos/films a nonperson was blotted out by inserting shadowy figures into the foreground.

freedomwinsout, Maduro won’t go after Chavez’s daughter. He is too busy accumulating his own billions. Can’t those Hollywood types chip in? Leftist leaders live like kings because they deserve it because they are so compassionate. They love the “little people” and want them to share in the wealth while it lasts. In the words of that great economics intellect, Celine Dion: “Let them touch those things for once.”

Does jimmy carter get a cut for his support in “certifying” the “elections?”

When socialists go out of favor within a socialist country, they become un-persons. When socialist leaders destroy a socialist country, they become “not the right leaders,” because socialism works, if they have the right leaders.

Nice to see that even this tepid an article runs in the Post.

Would be great if they would have included Jimmy Carter’s involvement in election observations since that is a main topic of the article.
