In Texas, 1 million people have handgun permits
Sheena McKenzie
At a protest against police violence in Dallas, a young man wanders the streets with a gun casually slung over his shoulder.
The hefty weapon hangs all the way from his hip to his ankle, apparently barely raising the eyebrows of passersby.
A few hours after the Dallas shooting, local police posted a photo of the man on Twitter, saying: "This is one of our suspects. Please help us find him!" Videos later emerged online purportedly showing the man peacefully walking in the crowd during the shooting. The original tweet remains online -- long after he man, named Mark Hughes, told Dallas station KVTV he was interrogated by police and released without apology. The sight of someone walking through a packed protest toting a large gun would be cause for alarm for many people around the world, but in Texas, it's not so far-fetched.
Over 1 million gun carriers
Of the 27.5 million people who live in this southern U.S. state, more than 1 million people are licensed to carry a handgun.
Dallas County has 57,620 licensees -- the third highest number in the state, following Harris (139,563) and Tarrant (71,504) counties.
A "handgun" is defined as "any firearm that is designed, made, or adapted to be fired with one hand." While Texans are required to have a permit to carry a handgun, they do not need one for rifles or shotguns -- which may help explain the man at Thursday's protest brazenly toting a long weapon.
Texas is one of 45 states that allow some form of open carry. Only five states -- New York, Florida, Illinois, South Carolina and California -- and the District of Columbia ban

Doesn't matter. They honor each other's.

Well, I am waiting to hear about stories about people in Vermont who carry either open or concealed (and you have never needed a permit to do so there). Or in Maine and New Hampshire (funny how most U.S. states that border Canada allow people to carry and also have homicide rates that are about the same as the neighbouring Canadian province(s)).

SICK: ‘Black Lives Matter’ Supporters Celebrate Murder of Dallas Cops
Black Lives Matter supporters responded to the sniper attack in Dallas by celebrating the murder of the five police officers who were gunned down in cold blood.
BLM sympathizers took to Twitter to express their joy at the carnage, with one commenting, Yall pigs got what was coming for yall.
Next time a group wants to organize a police shoot, do like Dallas tonight, but have extra men/women to flank the Pigs!, added another.
Dude hell yeah someone is shooting pigs in dallas. Solidarity, commented another user.
DALLAS keep smoking dem pigs keep up the work, remarked another.
Last nights events in Dallas were as painfully predictable as they were tragic.

Texas law does not restrict the carrying of rifles or shotguns long guns except for:
Penal code 46.03.
But pre-schoolers are more familiar with the law than cops are, and carrying a rifle or shotgun anywhere will result in harassment regardless of what the law says.
And then there's the NFA weapons in Texas: machineguns and selective full-auto weapons, grenade launchers, silenced weapons and several other sorts of fun novelties:
Here is a look at per capita weapons data, based on the ATF's National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, and 2013 data from the U.S. Census.
While the ATF's National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record is the only accessible list of its kind, it is not all-inclusive. NFA firearms only include the categories regulated by The National Firearms Act of 1934: machine guns, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, suppressors, destructive devices like bombs and grenades, concealable devices with the ability to discharge a shot through the energy of an explosive, and any firearm with a bore over half an inch that has not been determined to have a legitimate sporting use.
While this list is lengthy, it does not include categories like pistols, which make up a large percentage of the guns in the U.S. As such, the total numbers of guns in each state would actually be much higher than the figures here.
Texas comes in at number 18, with 12.8 guns on record for every 1,000 residents. That's 337,309 firearms among 26,448,193 people. In fact, the actual numbers are probably higher because Texans are not required by law to register their firearms. As such, the ATF can only count those who seek background checks.

At least the guy had the presence of mind to turn himself in..........
I thought I read somewhere that there were 3 million CCL holders in Texas. Don’t remember where I read that, I think CNN’s info is wrong.
