At least one sniper in Dallas killed five police officers and wounded seven more in a coordinated attack that ended when police used a bomb to kill a shooter who told them he wanted to kill white officers, authorities said Friday.
The attack came during one of several protests across the United States against the killing of two black men by police this week, the latest in a long string of killings that gave rise to the Black Lives Matter movement.
Police described Thursday night's ambush as carefully planned and executed and said they had taken three people into custody before killing the fourth after a long standoff in a downtown garage.

Chief said this morning that they put an explosive device on the arm of a robot, sent it into the room, and detonated the explosive.
He of course agrees with Obama that more gun control is needed.

“We saw no other option but to use our bomb robot and place a DEVICE on its extension for it to DETONATE where the suspect was. Other options would have exposed our officers to great danger,” Brown said. “He seemed lucid during negotiations.”
So, yes they used an explosive device of some kind to disable ( kill ) this perpetrator.
Sorry, this post was in error. I'd read earlier reports they'd use a robot to detonate a bomb the perp had. Upon reading additional reports, it appears they did take him out with a bomb.
This is SOP for destroying or detonating a terrorist or perp placed bomb that is too difficult or dangerous to disarm. The remotely detonated explosive device is immediately available to the police bomb squad, as is the robot used to place it. The explosive device is not intended to be used against humans, so it appears the police adapted to the situation of an entrenched sniper who would not surrender.
It appears as there was no collateral (excluding political) to this use of an "explosive device", unlike the MOVE city block.
They (the police), in fact, were responding to bomb threats.

Agreed, not hard to set up, but a “throw it now” tool either. I remember Vietnam vets telling how they would rig a time fused M18A1 in their rucks and if pursued, the last man would yank the igniter and drop his pack- and keep on hauling tail. 30-45 seconds later the claymore would go bang and the trail would get quiet....
Later, we had a similar tool- the Anti-Pursuit Munition- an AP wedge of the scatterable artillery munition (DPICM) with a timed initiation- pull the pin like a frag and toss it behind you- 20 seconds later it would deploy up to 16 very sensitive wires- any disturbance would detonate the munition. Never had to use one, but the were nice to have.
