Theresa May has won the first round of the contest to become the next Tory leader and PM and she says she is the only candidate left who can unite the party.
The home secretary got 165 of 329 votes cast by Tory MP's. Andrea Leadsom came second with 66 and Michael Gove got 48.......
Following the result, Mr. Gove, the justice secretary and a leading Leave campaigner, insisted he would stay in the race, saying the winner should be someone who backed Brexit.
Mrs. Leadsom, an energy minister, was also a key figure in the campaign to leave the EU, appearing alongside Boris Johnson in some of the TV debates.

UKIP and Boris Johnson both say Andrea Leadsom is the best candidate. Most of the MP's who do not support Brexit in their hearts want Theresa May, who is a CINO who campaigned for Remain, now she is dragging her feet on implementation even as she says she's for it.
Isn’t May the sick bitch who banned Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer from the UK, whuile allowing in dozens of radical imams?
By doing this, isn't Gove basically splitting the Leave vote and allowing May to waltz in with solid support from the Remains?
Still no article 50 implementation, don’t trust these bastards
May is saying if she becomes PM, she would not implement Article 50 immediately, showing her true colors.
Farage called for immediate implementation of Article 50 right after the referendum.
She is a ‘politically correct, left, liberal’ as Peter Hitchens puts it.
I can’t say she’s the one who did that, but she is PC all the way.
Not sure what Gove’s game is, but its obvious the leading Leave candidate for PM against the Remain Theresa May is Andrea Leadsom based on this vote.
Do the Cons. voters or the politicians get to vote?
So 100,000s of people across Britain will vote?
Just politicians, similar to choosing the majority leader except that the majority leader will then be sworn in as Prime Minister.
Only MPs vote for party leader (and hence PM). This is indirect democracy.
Its a party membership vote which puts the number in the thousands at least, probably in the low hundreds of thousands.
Its tighter than a closed primary.
Like 1000 Conservative party members in each county of England?
“May is saying if she becomes PM, she would not implement Article 50 immediately, showing her true colors.”
Sounds like the Tories there have their own version of Paul Ryan...BUMMER!
I think the MP’s only narrows the field down to two candidates who are then voted on by the regular Tory party members. I think nextrush’s higher estimate is right - around 200 000 members or so.
Cheers.
No. This is just to select the two candidates who go forward to the party vote.
