Whenever folks in Penfield, New York get a hankering for pancakes for lunch they head over to the 5 Mile Café.
The family-owned restaurant is known in those parts for serving breakfast any time of the day (order their homemade corned beef hash).
They are also known for their patriotism.
We are very patriotic here at the café all year round not just this time of year, owner Jennifer Aquino told me. We have American flags and patriotic things around the café.
So Jennifer decided to ask the town for a permit so she could post a God Bless America banner on the front of her restaurant. She wanted to display the banner from Memorial Day through Independence Day.
There was just one significant problem.

Wow, that surprises me.
NY still infested with Tories, I see.
Solution. Paint it on the storefront. Then it isn't a banner.
Liberals don’t like patriotism.
Its that simple. Not that they’re embarrassed in their lack of pride in our country.
Such stupid regulations don’t fly with me.
Good idea.

America needs to start a grass root campaign to replace all the local control freaks and work our way up the chain...
Business owner knows the rules, but chooses to break them.
City stuck with either making them take it down, or possibly facing legal consequences for selective enforcement.
All are equal under the law.
If they allowed this one to be up past time, any other business owner could argue that they should be allowed to have their banner up longer.
Then they are back to having trashy banners all over the place.
BTW, I make my living selling banners and t-shirts and the like.
I am also on my HOA board and PID board. You can’t just pick and choose what rules you are going to enforce, just because you like or don’t like what the sign says.
Problem solved, but DO IT ANYWAY.
The town limit is three weeks———rules are rules.
.
I just saw this story and immediately thought the same thing.
This is one of those stories that if you just read the headline you’re thinking, “Man, those atheist tyrants are trying to squash freedom of religion everywhere!” only to click on the article and discover that it’s merely the length of time allotted to banner that’s at question (apparently) and not the content.
Aw, Crusher, why are you ruining everyone’s fun by being logical and reasonable?
P.S. I totally agree with you.
I think his choice of words is revealing. He could have put it much more tactfully, while making his point.
Sounds like a First Amendment case if there ever was one.........................
There is no limit on Free Speech......................
Exactly !
Easy solution! Take down the banner and replace it with a permanent sign.
Because rules always respect rights, and therefore must be accepted without challenge. All hail the rulemakers.
“There is no limit on Free Speech......................”
There is on where it’s displayed. This town says three weeks.
They can relocate or change the law.
