Boris Johnson has announced he will not be standing in the Conservative Party leadership contest, a move that has surprised many Westminster commentators.
There former London Mayor announced his decision this morning after Justice Secretary Michael Gove, widely seen as his running mate, decided to abandon him at the last minute and run for party leader himself.
The shock decisions follow repeated criticism of Boris Johnson from Leave supporters who raised concerns that he would renege on a pledge to end the EUs free movement policy, and would not trigger Article 50 soon enough...

This is good news. Gove is the best guy we could get (who is currently in Parliament anyway) to handle the Brexit transition.
Pray that he beats Theresa May!
The leadership contest will last until about September, with updates and dropouts every Tuesday and Thursday. It’s a moderately deliberate process.
I would like to have seen Boris as PM.... I believe he is stepping aside to ensure Brexit occurs, because they need the support of parliament. Still, it would have been wonderful to have him as the figurehead...
That’s a shame!
The Brexit move needs to be led by someone with fire in their belly!
