Even a simple compliment like "I love your shoes," at least when addressed to a woman in leadership during a Q&A after a speech, really means "I notice how you look and dress more than I value your intellectual contributions. How you look is really important." Welcome to the dreary world of totalitarian Political Correctness. You can say absolutely nothing that is fun, frivolous or complimentary based on appearance. Everything must be a politically-correct intellectual discussion in PC Newspeak.

So would the correct way to say it be, “I liked your speech, how about we go and get a drink together”?

The correct response to “I love your shoes” is: “Thank you. Now get me a sandwich”.

Liberals can never take anything at face value. EVERYTHING must be analyzed to death through the lens of political correctness. And they are ALWAYS looking for a way to be offended.
