They did classify the crossbow as anathema during that time. That probably applied to the makers of crossbows too.
You see with a crossbow a peasant could take out a highly trained knight.
And that just would not do.
Only the wealthy and powerful should be armed, otherwise those little people might start getting ideas above their station.
