Britain leaving the EU means trouble ahead for Germany and its hardest task will be convincing the Brits to drop a self-defeating ideology, a leading foreign policy expert told The Local.
German business has a lot of vested interest in British markets, explains Josef Janning, head of the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) in Berlin.
And that means Germany will have its work cut out negotiating a settlement which gives Britain access to the single market after it leaves the European Union. [ ]
Being integrated into the single market will mean the UK will have to swallow the fact that they will have to rubber stamp Brussels legislation rather than gain the independence promised to them by the Leave campaign.

The overlords of Brussels (and Berlin) are in full panic mode and aren’t even trying to hide that fact.
They ought not have insisted on pushing a social market economy on them by treaty then, never mind a one-size-fits-all interest rate system that favors only Germany.
How, by Germany threatening to send the UK to the showers?
Cornwall's Finest (Wales)
“some chicken, some neck”
Square peg/round hole syndrome.
Because that’s not who we are!
Because if you dont follow the EUs edicts on social policy, environmental policy and economic policy your production cost for any goods you produce are most likely going to be less than those of an EU member.
This will be an unfair advantage for which you must be punished or you will not get to participate in the EU Free Market
Practical reality says that the party that holds the power in any relationship is the party that cares the least about the relationship.
The article makes it clear that Germany NEEDS the relationship, meaning that with Brexit the Brits are the ones who now hold the power.
I’d expect to see a free trade agreement, one seriously in Britains favor, “negotiated” pretty quickly. Which will then have major ramifications on the actions of other large EU players relative to their own memberships in the union.
Ruh, roh... We all know what happens when Germany gets angry.....
I think all the real Germans died in World War II. Hitler might be impressed by Merkel and would have taken the EU as a 2nd place prize.
I'd be real careful with those threats. Remember the German auto industry makes a fat profit from the UK market. If the UK erected tariff barriers to EU automakers their profits would decline dramatically, then how is Germany going to pay for Greece, Portugal, Italy etc. Remember the UK was one of a small number of countries in the EU that actually was a net contributor, now Germany and France will have to pony up the gap left by the UK exit.
IINM, the Trump policy does not (yet) entail increasing our military presence in Europe. Still the opposite.
The best thing the Brits can do for themselves is laugh in their faces and let them stamp their feet wee socialists feet in frustration.
This is yet another aspect of the whole thing that reminds me of Network: from when Beale is confronted by the CEO and preacher of the world order of business.
Some rather spectacular assumptions in this diatribe, specifically the assumption that Britain will be the only defector.
Treaties can be repudiated.
In fact, many should be.
Well perhaps Ms. Merkel should come to her senses instead....as I recall all sorts of promises were made about great the EU was going to be. Great Britain has decided that they don’t want it any more......get over it.
Short of going to war (which by the way Germany lost last time) what can they do? Tsk tsk tsk
The Germans tried this before. A couple of times, too.
It’s actually European Bureaucrats and their rubber stamp Parliament.
