Scotland last night gave a resounding endorsement to the EU as the UK overall voted for Brexit, raising the prospect of a demand for a second independence referendum.
..In the early hours, Alex Salmond was.. announcing that, if Scotland voted to remain but the UK overall voted to leave, Nicola Sturgeon would implement the SNP manifesto. The SNP document for last months Scottish election states that Holyrood should have the right to hold a second independence vote if there is a significant and material change in circumstances from 2014, such as Scotland being taken out of the EU against its will.
And, as the cross-border divide on the issue became clear, with almost three quarters of Edinburgh voters opting for remain, Fiona Hyslop, the Scottish external affairs secretary, said: There will be many people in Scotland who want to consider the situation if there is a Brexit vote. There are many people in Edinburgh who voted clearly for no for Scottish independence barely two years ago and believed David Cameron when he said that Scottish independence would take them out of the European Union. Well, actually the reverse is clearly being indicated in the result so far, so they are going to have to reappraise their situation as to what they think is the best prospect for Scotland going forward.
Edinburgh returned what could be the highest support for the EU, 74.4 per cent.
..Among them was Alasdair Allan, the SNP minister for Europe. He said, just before 3am: What the Scottish government will always do is put our interests first when it comes to Europe and our relationship with Europe. I cant predict what the UK result is going to be but I can say the Scottish government will always put those interests first.

by a small % and the SNP has said that the fact of the UK leaving the EU has changed the circumstances and would ask for a new referendum
I think it will take a few years to put another referendum up for vote. It’s not like it’s a State proposition. And as the story goes ... the king may die, I may die, or the horse just might learn to talk.
I am of Scottish descent, and I am sickened by what they have become. If the putrid, Communist, Islamo-loving, homo-embracing snowflakes want to be joined at the hip with Adolf Merkel, them let them go.
Northern Ireland voted to stay as well.
There is now open talk of them joining the rest of Ireland.
My ancestral countrymen may be about to achieve something through the back door that 150 years of terrorism and troubles could not give them. A united Ireland.
It looks that way. England would return to being little England of the 12th century - minus the duchy of normandy
He was the guy with too many notes?
It all started with the Scottish Enlightenment, and that started with the Education Act of 1496.
I think any existing member of the EU can block the admission of a new member. If Scotland voted to separate from England, Spain would probably veto their admission to the EU...they oppose any separatism as setting a bad example for Catalonia.
Nope. Scotland gets a subsidy from EU because of their lower economic status compared to Germany, France & England. I remember $1000 per person subsidy.
HUNH........what’s that supposed to mean ?
And after what Scotland has become ( Socialist/Commie, live off others lazy gits looking for handouts ), England is better off without them!
But that snarky remark hardly fits someone who LED AN EMPIRE'S MILITARY BAND and who plays NO instrument; even though he DID start out as a drummer boy. ;^)
Sorry.
I didn’t know that making sense was required.
Oh, yes, we can joke around about a lot of stuff....just NOT my family. :-)
