Scotland last night gave a resounding endorsement to the EU as the UK overall voted for Brexit, raising the prospect of a demand for a second independence referendum.
..In the early hours, Alex Salmond was.. announcing that, if Scotland voted to remain but the UK overall voted to leave, Nicola Sturgeon would “implement the SNP manifesto”. The SNP document for last month’s Scottish election states that Holyrood should have the right to hold a second independence vote if there is a “significant and material” change in circumstances from 2014, such as Scotland being taken out of the EU against its will.
And, as the cross-border divide on the issue became clear, with almost three quarters of Edinburgh voters opting for remain, Fiona Hyslop, the Scottish external affairs secretary, said: “There will be many people in Scotland who want to consider the situation if there is a Brexit vote. There are many people in Edinburgh who voted clearly for ‘no’ for Scottish independence barely two years ago and believed David Cameron when he said that Scottish independence would take them out of the European Union. Well, actually the reverse is clearly being indicated in the result so far, so they are going to have to reappraise their situation as to what they think is the best prospect for Scotland going forward.”
Edinburgh returned what could be the highest support for the EU, 74.4 per cent.

He said, just before 3am: ““What the Scottish government will always do is put our interests first when it comes to Europe and our relationship with Europe. I can’t predict what the UK result is going to be but I can say the Scottish government will always put those interests first.”

The border is only 96 miles long. Building a nice big wall to keep out the illegal immigrant wave of rapefugees trying to get into England and Wales shouldn’t be too costly.
There is no way Scotland can afford to pay for their own welfare state much less a wave of rapefugees. They should take that into account before risking their own Exit vote.

Germany has won at last.
I think that Scotland probably voted to remain just to thwart the desires of most English people outside of the capital. The Scots hate the English but not so much the UK which they view as an equal partnership that they keep afloat with their enterprise and oil money.
To some extent this may be true, Scotland has always punched above its weight in relative terms within the UK. This has led to a rather schizophrenic relationship with London, partly a sort of symbiotic “you’re so lucky to have us along” and partly a desire for total independence.
It is really quite a similar thing to Quebec within Canada, and equally destined to remain divided down the middle.
I don’t think the English have anywhere near the same animosity towards the Scots, in general they are quite self-absorbed and hardly notice the fringe nationalities of their “kingdom” but if Scotland ever voted to leave it would be a minor sensation that would be brushed off as neither here nor there.
This outcome will no doubt fire up another round of campaigning for Scottish independence, maybe this time around nobody in London will be arsed to speak against the idea. Sometimes it’s just better to part ways. Then Scotland can rejoin the EU and help pay for Greek politicians to prove that Germany can’t do everything.
I think the UK will seriously need to up their game.
I was discussing this with a close friend (also of Scots heritage) just the other day.
We came to the conclusion that any Scots who carried the fierce independence (ala William Wallace and Robert the Bruce) in their bones have long since left the Old World for America, Australia, New Zealand or other venues that offered freedom and challenge.
Few of the old blood remain. The bulk now are Fabians, Lackeys, Socialists and amateur whiskey tasters.
I am ashamed to say that the town from which my father hailed is sometimes called “Little Moscow” in reference to the large number of Communists there. I have one uncle left there. He’s 86 years old and works every day.
Unfortunately he’s the only one in the family who does.
I'm not so sure about Germany "winning" in the same form it is right now. I hear about a lot of rumbling from German states about Merkel.
It may be that they will ask for a break-up of Germany into statelets with each joining the EU separately. Germany is anyway a heavily federated country and this could tip it over the edge. A Europe with smaller states in a confederation like Switzerland would make for a better place rather than a huge government entity
