The small handful of neoconservatives and other GOP establishment hacks who have openly endorsed Hillary will in the long run cause less harm than people like Ryan, Romney, the Bushes, etc, who work behind the scenes to sabotage Trump’s campaign and get Hillary elected. If the nomination were something "powerful Republican insiders" could give away, Jeb Bush or Marco Rubio would be this years nominee.

Also, political promises made four years in advance are promises made to be broken.
