The shop knows who he is because they are paying attention. When he's denied, he whines about the shop not selling to him because he's a reporter (not a protected class, Neil).
Unfortunately for the Sun Times, they sent the wrong guy. The author has a well-documented history of alcoholism and admits to spousal abuse. That's a disqualification for this shop, even if he passes the NICS check. You can't un-know what you know, and any FFL has sole, absolute discretion to deny a sale for any reason.
So his point seems to be: Guns are too easy to get because this shop won't sell to an alcoholic abuser. or something. Front page news in Chicago: The system works, even if you have to read between the lines to draw that conclusion.
