The guy was born here in the States, raised by Afghan ‘refugee’ family.
He enjoyed all the advantages of an American citizen, but was never ‘one of us’, not from his childhood (recounted by those who knew him) to adulthood. Calling him ‘an American’ contradicts these.

The truth of it is (in his question of how an American becomes a terrorist) that they (the ones with which perpetrate these disasters) ARE NOT AMERICANS to begin with.
Largely the product of immigrants who should never have been allowed in this country in the first place. The benefit of birth here is bestowed to our complete disadvantage and peril. Their parents (some whose allegiance mostly resides elsewhere) cannot possibly raise a ‘real’ American. What they end up raising are tainted seeds destined for famine and ill fortune.
We don’t need them; we never did. Ever.
Because America really, really sucks and we’ve never done anything positive for the world? Uh, NOT! A fine example to watch is Dinesh D’Souza’s “America”. Nicely done IMHO. Of course there are many more out there.

I must admit, I had never heard about him until he decided to come out against Trump.
Two types of “citizens” here.
1) They became citizens with the a-priori intent of conducting a terrorist attack.
2) Potentially “normal” people who, thanks to an education system and press that continually strives to paint the US as “bad” lashes out as an enabled malcontent. Enabled by religion and/or family echoing the educational and media sentiment.

I think we need to look at just what an American is. It certainly has to mean more than just sharing geography.
At this point I'd extend that to "democrats".
