In the latest and perhaps decisive battle over the role of women in the military, Congress is embroiled in an increasingly intense debate over whether they should have to register for the draft when they turn 18.
On Tuesday, the Senate approved an expansive military policy bill that would for the first time require young women to register for the draft. The shift, while fiercely opposed by some conservative lawmakers and interest groups, had surprisingly broad support among Republican leaders and women in both parties.
The United States has not used the draft since 1973 during the Vietnam War. But the impact of such a shift, reflecting the evolving role of women in the armed services, would likely be profound.
Under the Senate bill passed on Tuesday, women turning 18 on or after Jan. 1, 2018, would be forced to register for Selective Service, as men must do now. Failure to register could result in the loss of various forms of federal aid, including Pell grants, a penalty that men already face. Because the policy would not apply to women who turned 18 before 2018, it would not affect current aid arrangements.
The fact is, said Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona and the chairman of the Armed Services Committee, every single leader in this country, both men and women, members of the military leadership, believe that its fair since we opened up all aspects of the military to women that they would also be registering for Selective Services.
The Supreme Court ruled in 1981 that women did not have to register for the draft, noting that they should not face the same requirements as men because they did not participate on the front lines of combat.

Have you ever met personally this man "of high moral and ethical character"?
If not then the only things you know about him are what he and his PR apparatus have let you know about him.
Having said that, Cruz certainly got this one right.
What?!! Seriously? YOU were the one stereotyping by saying “they.” Sheesh!
Of course I got it...and you were stereotyping by the mere use of the word “they”....I was being sarcastic when I first asked “who is this “they” that you speak of.” I don’t like when posters assume all women are supporting the women’s lib agenda.
Oh and I could care less about your condescending insulting snarky comments or opinion of me. Don’t reply—Total waste of bandwidth.
If women want to be equal then be treated as equal.
exactly
My son just went to the marines and saw how women are treated differently. hey don’t have to shave their hair, they don’t have the same physical tests and yet they demand to be treated as equals in combat units, B/S
I have a daughter and a son who just joined the marines and he said how women are treated differently. They do not have to shave their heads, they do not have the same physical tests and yet demand they be treated as equal.
Well give them equality and treat them the same and that means the draft, the physical tests etc.
My daughter has understood she is not the same nor are any of us. I am not as strong as some men, nor am I as fast, educated etc and this equality B/S pisses me off to not end.
None of us are equal, but we can strive to better
to join the marines men has to do 3 pulls ups, a woman does none , she has just to hang there for 30 secs, she has an easier running test, has a easier situp test and they say they want to be next to me son in combat , Hell No
Sometimes the best way to fix a problem is complete system failure then rebuild from the ground up following sound fundamentals. We don't have that luxury with our military.
I thank your son for taking the bold move into an environment that is so messed up by our "leaders". I hope he leads us out of this lunacy.
Semper Fi.
I was not stereotyping anything - you chose to see what you were predisposed to see.
And I wasn’t being the slightest bit snarky’ - I was simply stating the obvious truth.
Surely you are not referring to the Canadian who sealed his and his mother's records just like Barak Obama? The guy the Dems were praying would get the nomination so they could out him right after the convention. Not that high moral and ethical character?
Two choices: Hillary or Trump.
I TOLD YOU NOT TO REPLY.
Of course you don’t think so~that is what a stereotyper would think LOL
Sheesh You are a real condescending piece of work!
DON’T REPLY. Second request.
You are exactly right! The idiots in the pentagon and the dod already have women in combat positions. They wanna be equal? Ok, fine and dandy. They should absolutely have to register for the draft. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. And I say this having a daughter too. Sigh ‘em up right now!
Yes, I understand - when I reply it’s a “waste of bandwidth.”
On the other hand, when you reply, it’s “a wonderful insight and not to be missed.”
Tell you what, when you have your own web site, I promise I’ll follow your dictates to the letter.
Not sure what your problem is. YOu seem to have some real issues. I am asking for the last time, PLEASE DO NOT REPLY.
These aren’t my “sisters” or are you incapable of reading comprehension you little puke.
Freeper is crawling with you little pimple-faced, snot-nosed punks sitting in your Mama’s basement eating pizza rolls.
Get lost troll.
No one is being drafted. Registration is meaningless feel-good Conservative Movement virtue signaling.
The current version of the Selective Service System is a jobs program for bureaucrats and clerks,
***And I say this having a daughter too. Sigh em up right now!***
Is your daughter a feminist or did you suck at being a parent?
If she’s not then you’re an idiot! You’ll be singing a different tune when Nancy Pelosi and her insane pal happily force your daughter into combat where she can get raped by Islamic extremist.
I swear, you stick a keyboard in front of some people and out come the most ridiculous comments. I hope she doesn’t read this.
