A Dutch woman who has been in jail in Qatar since mid-March after she reported being raped, has been found guilty of "illicit consensual fornication" and being "drunk in a public place." At a court hearing in Doha Monday, the 22-year old, whom CNN has identified only as Laura, was handed a one-year suspended sentence and placed on probation for three years for the sex-related charge, and fined 3,000 Qatari Riyals ($823) for being drunk outside a licensed location.
She'll almost certainly be deported immediately. A Syrian man also appeared alongside her and was found guilty of the same crimes. He was sentenced to 100 lashes for the illicit fornication charge and a further 40 lashes for the illegal consumption of alcohol. As a Muslim he is not allowed to drink at all under Qatari law.
According to Brian Lokollo, a lawyer who was hired by the woman's family, Laura was at a hotel bar having drinks with a friend in the Qatari capital, but then had a drink that made her feel "very unwell."
She reportedly woke up in an unfamiliar location and realized "to her great horror" that she had been raped after her drink was spiked, Lokollo said. When she reported the rape to the police, she herself was imprisoned.
In the nearby United Arab Emirates in 2013, a Norwegian woman who reported being raped by a colleague was sentenced to 16 months in jail, charged for having unlawful sex, making a false statement and the illegal consumption of alcohol. Marte Deborah Dalelv was later pardoned by Dubai's ruler.

How surprising is it that muslim migrants commit an epidemic of rapes when they go to western countries?
Do western governments warn people adequately about the dangers of these things in muslim countries? (Rape, and being imprisoned for reporting it)
Another reason we should stop considering followers of Mohammad as a region and recognize that they constitute a group of insane super monkey pig-dogs.
Islam is just filth. Its treatment of women is sick.
So if a non-muslim goes to one of these hell holes and rapes muslim women will the women still be prosecuted? Will the man still get off scott free?
The man didn’t get off scot free - he got 140 lashes.
Stop spending your money in these backward countries
I’m surprised the FR investigative branch hasn’t sussed this guy out yet. I have a sneaking suspicion he’s a homegrown Jihadi and there is a connection to Orlando. Occam’s razor.
Yes. Almost inconceivable that a man would be punished for rape in an islamic country, and that the woman wouldn’t be stoned to death.
Maybe there’s hope?
I takes some effort and humility but when you are on some else’s turf you need to know, and play by, their rules. I certainly do when I travel and I try to never assume that my “Liberal Western Democrat Socialist Feel Do-Good You Should Be Like Me” card will protect me.
Maybe your host country gives you a break but maybe not.
If you don’t like the rules then stay out!!! Is not that what we tell people coming to this country?
This country is so great and welcoming, that it doesn't require vistors to follow the rules, but for a few - no killing people being the big one, no drunk driving, no rape. Otherwise, it's pretty much do what you want, and if you aren't a citizen, you'll get preferential treatment.
“Maybe theres hope?”
When I think about possible outcomes of this culture war I come up with these possibilities:
1. The cultures forcefully separate within separate borders, like it used to be. The deserved death of the multicultural experiment.
2. One or the other culture will subjugate the other.
3. The creation of a new culture that is a melding of values of both. A more civilized and “liberal” Islam and a less permissive, more traditional western culture.
I keep thinking that there’s a good chance things will end up at 3. For that to happen the leftist ideology has to be vanquished.
It’s racist to warn people that other cultures are hideous. If you don’t want horrible illogical things to happen, stay home.
