How Obama Has Made It Harder for Companies to Hire
The Daily Signal ^ | 6/10/2016 | Patrick Tyrrell

Government data released on Wednesday shows the number of private-sector job openings was at an all-time high in April. Companies, however, hired the fewest number of people on a seasonally adjusted basis in nine months. Why the disparity?

The JOLTS (Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey) data the government released show there were 5,289,000 private-sector job openings in April—114,000 more than in March. The government report also shows that private-sector hires declined by 169,000 compared to March.

With private companies advertising so many job openings, why are they not filling them?

Duh! If one can get %80 of the income of an entry level job for doing nothing, why work?

People make themselves unhire-able. Tattoos, piercings, unable to pass drug testing, past felonies, not enough education or degrees in useless topics, like “women’s studies.” Employers also don’t want to hire members of protected “victim” groups, ie, flamers, muslims, some blacks that have the proverbial chip on their shoulder.

Twenty years ago when I wanted to hire somebody it cost me about 45% more to have them on the parole than I paid them. So, if my budget was $10/hour, the maximum I could pay them was about $6.89. Then they paid their part of the Dane geld and their take-home was pretty small. Nobody would work for that. They wanted to take home $10/hour.

I was working with the owner of a tiny flooring company. The job was less than forty hours, but time sensitive. At five he sent everybody home and it was just the two of us. He explained the law on overtime. If he worked them more than he had to pay them overtime which would make the job a money loser for him. Even though the employees wanted the money at straight time. (One of them was desperate, but no sale on working more.)

Now, figure all the accounting paperwork and required forms. This business owner had been fined multiple times because he worked rather than filing paper. There wasn’t time for both, but the state doesn’t care what his problems are. His company would be much larger and employ more people if it weren’t for the constant drag of the various governmental requirements.

I can tell you why from owning a business for over 45 years.

The government has replaced Mom and Dad with private businesses that hire employees. We have all morphed into BABY SITTERS and an ENDLESS SOURCE OF INCOME FOR THE LEGAL PROFESSION.

When I started my business back then the only thing that was required by the government was to withhold taxes and Social Security from their paychecks and nothing else. No other government involvement at all in the State of Texas.

Today you can compare business, government and the legal profession to ants and aphids. You know...those little bugs that have these little tubes on their back that when scratched secrete a sugary fluid that ants love?

With that in mind the cost of doing business in both actual outlay of payroll, the costs of protection from legal suits, compliance to government regulations, and the time and costs from handling and processing all paperwork involved, and compliance to a myriad of safety and environmental regulations, and a horde of various taxes, has made the profitability (and joy) of running a business a nightmare and a minefield.

What it has come down to is that the general population used to be thankful to have a job. Now they think it is a right. When I first entered the workforce when I was only 9 I was told by my boss “you came here looking for a job and you can leave here looking for a job.” I didn't understand fully at the time what he meant but later I did. He was telling me that if I didn't like my job I was free to go look for another. Today's employee generally has no concept to that philosophy.

“With private companies advertising so many job openings, why are they not filling them?”

It’s the staffing companies posting the job openings. Recruiters are busy procuring resumes because that’s one of their instruments for tracking “applicants”. If all a job seeker does is submit a resume’, they have not effectively applied for any job. After an interview, the job seeker may be asked to fill out an application if they are on a short list of interviewees. These staffing companies will not cease and desist just because you tell them that you are back to work and are out of the job market until further notice. Instead, they’re persistent in their attempts gather any new information on anyone they can. Unwittingly, many job seekers fall into this trap where personal control of their career path is increasingly being taken out of their own hands. Recruiters often do not have backgrounds and adequate enough experience to be able to interpret and comprehend the established career paths of people who do have relevant education, experience and applicable knowledge of a job in the industry(s) of their chosen professions. This puts certain job seekers at a disadvantage and practically forces them to go over the heads of the recruiter(s) who first contacted them. Account managers are not nearly as accessible to the job seeker and even if hired, they prefer to keep the employee at a distance by placing a buffer in between the employee and the decision-making people in HR. These “buffers” are given titles such as “Talent Engagement Manager” or “Client Delivery Manager” and they are the go-to people who handle requests for raises, paid time off, health insurance matters, etc. but they don’t make any decisions regarding those things. HR is out of control. They have way too much power. Modern corporate culture is 85% bullshit. The only corporate culture that should mean anything is Quality Assurance and Quality Control. That’s the bottom line. So many of the job openings you see being posted and re-posted online are just bait for getting job seekers to give up whatever personal and professional information their resumes reveal to individuals trained in data mining. The more they get a handle on what your personal and professional life is like, the better they can also determine your financial position and possibly even what your home and private life is like. The best thing you can do is to insist that you are the Customer. You must insist that you are not soliciting the staffing company and their recruiters. Treat them as being the solicitors that they are and let them know who is boss.

I’m in a rural, southern community. There is a lot of construction work going on here right now, but it’s all under the table, for the very reasons cited in the article and by some of the above posters. Big problem also for prospective employers is the explosion of drug availability and the resulting addiction problem. Even if employers are willing to hire someone with a felony record, they can’t take the chance the employee will relapse and steal equipment or worse still, the client’s personal belongings if the contract in question is a renovation.

People make themselves unhire-able...

Yes, and don't forget their inability to speak the language any where close to correctly. BTW, this affects not just blacks.

Just wait till next year when the Feds start compelling you to submit quarterly payroll data, broken down by race and gender. What employer wants to deal with such a painful exercise which, and the end of the day, can only open them to lawsuits?

I think you are giving staffing companies WAY too much credit for being clever and devious here. They are basically just doing what they have to in order to beat their 3000 competitors to the punch and earn a commission. Often times the recruiters are fresh college grads working on straight commission. They either want to earn a commission or get something on their resume that will allow them to move on to something better. They aren’t sitting around thinking of new ways to mine your data.

Saw a YouTube video of a guy explaining that his investment firm lists many job openings it never intends to fill. It makes the company look like it is flourishing when it’s not.

Yeah, but I think they do get their ‘marching orders’ from somewhere.
