Donald Trump's white America exists only in the minds of the panicked and fearful who have made him the GOP nominee
Donald Trump was born 70 years ago this month, at the very beginning of the baby boom. At that time, America was, in every sense, an unambiguously white country.
First, in demographic terms, nearly 90 percent of the population was categorized as white. Groups that in the not-too-distant past had been considered only partially or imperfectly or not really white such as Irish and German Catholics, Italians, and Jews had by now been largely granted white status, as part of a melting pot ideology which claimed to transform a multi-ethnic population into a society in which race and ethnicity were subsumed into a single American identity. (That this ideology could flourish in a culture that still featured massive legal discrimination against African Americans indicates the extent to which white America managed to avoid even thinking about the existence of black people.)
Second, the political, economic, and cultural dominance of white America was so taken for granted by white Americans that it was, as a social matter, invisible to them. At that time, whiteness in America was what sociologists call an unmarked category. For example, if a white person had been shown a photograph of the Senate, its practically certain that he or she would simply not have noticed that it was made up exclusively of white people. (Nor would the observer have noticed that all these people happened to be men, but thats a different topic.)
In other words, white and American were essentially synonyms. Hispanics made up less than two percent of the population, and they outnumbered Asian-Americans ten to one. Basically everyone in America was either white or black, and while in theory black people were full citizens too, in practice they werent, most obviously in the Jim Crow south, but in reality in the rest of the country as well.
That country no longer exists: or rather it only continues to exist in the increasingly panicked imaginations of the sorts of white people who have it still seems incredible when one puts it into words made Donald Trump the Republican partys presidential candidate.
Today, barely three out of five Americans are non-Hispanic whites. In another two or three decades, white people, as traditionally defined, will make up less than half the population. White America is in the process of disappearing, and its no surprise that tens of millions of people who thought of this as their country are frightened by the thought that it isnt any more.
All this helps explain incidents such as Trumps claim this week that a federal judge who has ruled against him in a lawsuit is a Mexican, even though the judge was born in Indiana. Clueless journalists treated this as yet another example of Trumps apparently bottomless ignorance, when in fact its obviously a strategic choice on his part.
To Trumps supporters, a person of Mexican ancestry is Mexican, rather than American, because Americans are white, and Mexicans arent. To the overt racists who make up Trumps and to a significant extent, the contemporary Republican partys electoral base, non-whites are at best Americans by courtesy or sufferance, because America has always been a white country.
A few years ago, Trump discovered that there was an enormous untapped market, as he would think of it, for overt racism in mainstream American politics. This is why he laid the groundwork for his presidential run by constantly repeating paranoid nonsense about Barack Obama not really being an American. He was, as they say in the business schools, establishing his brand.
It is very important to keep in mind that Donald Trump is now the leader of the Republican party, and that this means the Republican party is now the party of overt racism, in pretty much the same way the southern wing of the Democratic party was the party of overt, unreconstructed racism seventy years ago, when Trump first began to contaminate the planet.
Saying so isnt considered polite, because that would imply that, as long as its the party of Trump, and, more important, Trumpism, being a Republican is no longer a respectable thing to be. It isnt.
I smell fear and desperation
We’re racist, fascist, sexist and homophobic.
And its all our fault. Salon says so!
Why post this hateful crap?
Yep.
Pretty sure Trump was just pointing out the injustice of the judge without explicitly calling out his strong ties to La Raza.
What’s stuning is the lack of curiosity on the part of the media.
Because some people are ignorant of this still.
This is where Trump has trapped the left: The judge in question unambiguously self-identifies as Hispanic in his professional associations.
He is a member of a racist clique of lawyers and other judges who openly (indeed proudly) work to advance the interests of flow Hispanics.

FU SALON...you lose
To know the enemy.
“Why post this hateful crap?”
Do you need to go to your safe space? We’ll wait. :)
You should get a load of the feedback. Salon’s feedback is loaded with Trumpeters. LOL! Those fags at Salon don’t have a clue what to do.
We have an awakening populace. It’s no longer safe for lying lefties to spew their bile.
The bulk of this screed was no doubt already to be found pre-drafted on the word processors at Salon in the hope that Trump could someday, somehow cast as the candidate of white.
Trump headed them off and the proverbial pass. And now the race baiters at Salon and elsewhere may find themselves hoisted on their own petard
Frankly, I am sorely tired of that argument. “We need to keep up with what they think” “We need to make sure we’re all aware.....” blah, blah, blah.
How about making people feel less ‘ignorant’ by telling them there are many, many others out there that think like them? How about not bombarding them day after day with depressing, misleading crap that perverts the picture of the real value and decency out here in drive by America and not in the festering cesspools of our liberal urban enclaves? How about some of that for a change?
Because the Left needs to be called out on their racism. To call for equality for all American citizens no matter their background is one thing. To work to purposely through mass immigration to reduce the existing majority to the status of a minority is something else. It is one step removed from genocide.
That’s because non-white people are more easily controlled. Why the elites don’t say anything about gun violence in the inner-cities but will raise Hell when it happens in suburbia, in a desperate attempt to try and get white gun owners to get rid of their guns.
Would a judge belonging to a white supremacist group be allowed to judge a case involving a black person?
Would a judge belonging to a white supremacist group be allowed to even remain on the bench, if ties to a white supremacist group were shown to exist?
Pure anti-Trump. Where was the Barf Alert?
The very idea idea that the Birth Certificate question was a devious precursor to Trump’s entering the race! And on that subject, we have STILL not seen a valid long form BC for Hussein. Nor have we been told why Hussein uses among several others, a SS card from a state where he never lived, and which belonged to a deceased man.
Trump 2016!
