Morning all.....

Didn’t make it through last night’s rally, will be watching it shortly.

So, my 27 year-old son is suffering from a bad case of adult chicken pox. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for making him more comfortable while his has this horrible illness.

Hi Judy,

Oh gosh, your poor son - he must be miserable. Maybe Calamine lotion on the pox - it’s good for a lot of things and may help the itching.

Our resident Dr., Nikos, may have another suggestion.

I think my mother used a baking soda paste on our pox. Just add enough water to the soda to make it spreadable

Oatmeal baths and Cocoa butter baths . Dollar Tree store has it a low price.
Lots of them .
And place oatmeal pads on you.
Go to Dollar Tree Store and buy disposal gloves and stick the oatmeal and cocoa butter in them to stop the hands from itching .
Epsom salts may work too.

My sister had them in college and all that worked .

should be self limiting. Was he not vaccinated? Anti-viral meds if started early won’t hurt. Certainly NO NOT take any aspirin to avoid Reye’s Syndrome, would be rare, watch for the complications...meningitis, septicemia...

Stay in bed and watch cartoons like the rest of us used to do.

I had it when I was 18. Soaking in a tub with oatmeal something-or-other in it felt great, if I remember correctly.

Poor guy. Chicken pox can be miserable. I’ve had it 4 times. Usually get a really really bad headache with it. If you have an aloe plant the aloe juice helps the itching.

Oatmeal baths, great.

If you are into Essential Oils, chamomile and lavender will soothe the inflammation and be very calming for the skin. They use chamomile on baby skin.

Here are some links from which to choose:

I hope he is feeling better very soon!

Hugs to you both,

Avoid messing with the skin. A thick white paste like a zinc oxide cream can help stop itch but leave it on. It will grow dirty and you reapply.

The problem with baths is getting out. The skin drying makes the itch unbearable. Best is just to not bathe the entire time, and keep thick zinc cream over the pox (can use cotton clothes over it, but best not clothing washed in commercial chemical detergents and dryer sheets etc). When it wears down add more cream. Highly unattractive but it works. Learned this from a French doc.

Advil for fever and discomfort.

Blistex for the eruptions. Knocks them down quick. I used it when I had Shingles. Same disease as Chicken Pox.

My 23 year old son had it a couple of months ago. He started taking l-lysine as soon as he felt symptoms. Consequently, he had a very mild case. I don’t know if it will help if your son starts it now. It’s worth a try. We take it for cold sores. Works great.
