Like many recent college grads, Rep. Elijah Cummings' (D-MD) daughter Adia sought to earn some extra cash by driving for Lyft, a ridesharing service. Unlike most recent college grads, Adia was driving a car with congressional license plates--which is against the rules. After someone posted a picture of the car on Popville, Cummings apologized for his daughter's use of the plates. He then said that he would swap out the plate and that the car was not his official vehicle.
Per the House of Representative rules, the plates are "only for the use of the Member and spouse, as well as for immediate transportation of the Member by staff."
In an effort to earn some extra money to pay her expenses at school, she signed up for a part-time position with one of the ride-sharing companies. They, in turn, gave her a sticker to apply to the windshield of the car," Cummings, D-Maryland, said in a statement.
A photo of the car with the special license plates and a Lyft driver sticker was spotted in Washington last week, which was then picked up by Washington neighborhood blog Popville on Monday.
The Maryland Democrat, who represents the Baltimore area in Congress, said his daughter has removed his congressional license plates from the car, and apologized for not removing the plates before loaning her the car.
Cummings said that his daughter would remain a Lyft driver.
That word was banned last week.
Elijah Cummings = all one needs to know about this story.
Come now, nothing is against the rules for Bolshies.
It appears she has a more honest job than her father.
That said, I am inclined to let this slide. There are more serious problems with this nutcase. E.g., he is part of a group that does absolutely nothing for Baltimore, Maryland, or the US.
Above the law, like a typical RAT.
Something IS fishy here!
His daughter has a real job that didn’t depend on cronyism or make-work policies to get it?!
In their minds this is reparations.
I believe Jesse's son is still in prison..?
Black Privilege.
Wrong Congress Critter. I believe you’re thinking of Hank Johnson from GA. http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=island+will+capsize&view=detail&mid=EADA044B4312B66011C8EADA044B4312B66011C8&FORM=VIRE
Remember the son of John Conyers, another crook, was using a gub'mint vehicle, and had some problems.
“—which is against the rules.”
How about it’s against the damn law.
If I am busted in this car, can I plead congressional immunity, or ambassador immunity (like arabs in Fararris)>
Sharks cruising the old slave routes...are the culprits.
In how many of the 57 states is it legal to put a license plate on a vehicle that is not registered for that plate?
You’ll go to jail for that in Michigan.
So, they can just move plates around from car to car? Timothy McVeigh would never have been arrested if that had been legal in Oklahoma.
But the republicans will do nothing about it. In fact, they won’t even talk about it.
Actually, these "special privileges" are among the few things you see in Washington that actually have a legitimate Constitutional basis.
The Constitution protects members of Congress from arrest and prosecution (in most cases) while Congress is in session, and while they are traveling on official business.
From Article 1, Section 6 ...
The Senators and Representatives...shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony, and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same ...
Believe it or not, the founders of this country gave so much power to the States that they felt a need to protect members of Congress from arrest and prosecution in neighboring states while traveling to and from Washington.
Always looking for a “deal” or a “program”
Years ago, a Porsche with NC rep plates cut me off and gave me the middle finger.
I called the state information line, explained what happened and many angry people directed me to the NC state rep’s office. I called him and found out it was his daughter.
Why that sorry POS had those plates, I will never know. It wasn’t explained to me but she did call me and apologize.
