When we think of a child passing into adulthood, we usually picture independent living perhaps with roommates, alone or eventually with a partner or spouse. Today that picture might need some adjustment.
A Pew Research poll released last week found that American men age 18 to 34 are more likely to be living with their parents than in any other living situation.
Whats going on? Whats happening to men? And, just as important: Why?

What is the etymology of “rearing.” I hate it because it sounds like a lot of spanking, which I think is for stupid, abusive parents who have tried nothing and are out of ideas.
“Rear” and “raise” are synonymous. In the U.S., “rear” has been preferred when speaking of children. I suspect primarily out of a desire to distinguish children from livestock and crops. But “rear” has been used in reference to livestock and crops.
Since the two words do not actually differ in meaning, I will continue to indulge my dislike of “rear.”
Most have forgotten that it used to be quite common for three or even four generations to live in the same big house.
Respect!
I am kind of shocked that a lot of the comments were like - they don’t want to grow up, etc. Total nonsense.
“We need to figure out how to bring back on the job training and improving the high school diploma so that a graduate is really ready to work.”
It is absurd that we have reached the point that a person needs a degree just to have a CHANCE of being able to make a living. A bachelor degree is worth much less in the job market now than a high school diploma was worth when I turned eighteen and actually represents far LESS of an education. Education now is a scam.
“Who wants to start a family with a woman with so many tattoos you can’t see their skin?”
Amen to that, I joined the Navy in ‘62 and went from high school to boot camp and I have ZERO tattoos. I hate the sight of them, ESPECIALLY on women! I can’t stand piercings either but at least most of them are not noticeable if they don’t have things stuck in them. Tattoos are permanent. I can’t imagine having a wife with tattoos and piercings other than tiny earring holes. Actually I would be fine if I never saw another earring even.
It is, especially when you consider that a person has to be deliberately non-productive during his education process when he could be productive during those years, while learning, instead.
“That implies that they are working more than you think they are.”
No, disagree. However, I do agree with your second paragraph. The stigma of going into the skilled trades needs to be done with. There’s a shortage of talent for these jobs as those currently performing them are aging out.
I can NOT; for life of me; understand how a woman; who changes their mind on a whim to change her hair style, Change it's color, CHange the clothes she's wearing, CHAnge the furniture arrangement in the living room, CHANGe the diet she is on, and finally CHANGE her mind about most everything; can choose to have such PERMANANT markings on her body!
I joined the Navy in '66, and I carefully avoided them because the college girls in Newport RI (where I was home ported) wouldn't date sailors with tattoos, because they were so tacky. For the most part, the only sailors that got tattoos back then were lifers.
I remember once when me and some of my shipmates got some new guy drunk out in town, and we convinced him that we all should go get tattoos - him first.
He fell for it.
So we went over to the tattoo parlor and he got this big garish tattoo, and the rest of us left and went back to the bar.
We all got initiated when we were the new guy on the ship, and that was his initiation.
Because the girls they should be dating have turned into man hating predators who want to enslave them.
The ladies need to understand one thing. If a woman is beautiful a tattoo can only lessen her beauty and if she is not beautiful a tattoo is the last thing on Earth that will help. I don’t care if it is just a tiny rosebud it does NOT make a woman look better.
Sharpies can be used if they only want to have a tat for a while.
