My thought on travel, if by car, is to not go where reciprocity isn’t given. For me here in Georgia where my WCL is, that means I don’t go to South Carolina if that is a personal option. All the other surrounding states have reciprocity.
That state's approach to "reciprocity" has always puzzled me, especially when compared to the rest of the South. Fortunately, I haven't had to make the choice you have since my travels haven't taken me there since out-processing from the Army at Ft. Jackson in 1981.
My understanding is fed law allows taking firearm thru non reciprocity state IF firearm is in locked case, separate from ammo and not accessible to those in vehicle...ie in trunk.
