Austria could elect the European Union's first far-right head of state on Sunday, with support for Freedom Party candidate Norbert Hofer buoyed by a migration crisis that has heightened fears about employment and security.
Opinion polls suggest the presidential run-off between Hofer and former Greens leader Alexander van der Bellen will be close. A far-right victory would resonate across the 28-member EU, where migration driven by conflict and poverty in the Middle East and elsewhere has become a major political issue.
Support for groups like the eurosceptic, anti-immigration Freedom Party (FPO) has been rising in various countries, whether they have taken in many migrants in the recent influx, like Germany and Sweden, or not, like France and Britain.
Most are still far from achieving majority support. The FPO has been in government before, serving as a coalition partner in the early 2000s when it was led by the late Joerg Haider.
But whoever wins the presidential election, it is likely to be a new high-water mark for Austria's and Europe's far right, all the more significant for being in a prosperous country with comparatively low, albeit rising, unemployment.

Patriotic Austrians who believe in their own right to choose how they live, and with whom they live, and who believe in borders, well, those are the "far right"
When is the left ever referred to the "far left" in the MSM?
If the patriots are starting to get uppity, the MSM paints them as the Far Right, meant to conjure up the Nazi boogeyman.
MSM - we know your lying tricks.
It’s incredibly consistent out of all media outlets. Makes me want to puke and I’m rarely able to finish an article anymore.
On the other hand, even Stalin would not be considered “Far Left” by today’s aholes. To them, far left simply does not exist.
They meant “radical right wing extremist racist hater”.
While the EU elites will certainly use far right to describe such people, the FPÖ is not anything of the sort, though. They are leftist national socialists with the typical internationalist bent (founded by national socialist Anton Reinthaller); they favor the so-called two-speed Europe with a hard euro for the stronger countries of the continent and a soft euro for the weaker ones. They also like to rail against Jews and Zionists. They certainly will take advantage of ordinary Austrians that want to protect their borders, their very lives, and their native culture.

Thank for the input. The MSM makes it difficult to know the truth when the language has been corrupted for years.

Initial exit poll results should start coming out in a few hours, but final official results will not come out until Monday morning, after mail-in ballots are counted.
Very close but the “far-right, xenophobic, racist” Hofer is in the lead by 50.4% vs 49.6% for the “moderate, sensible, environmentally friendly” van der Bellen. All the media is telling us that it is too close to call and in the end the Good Green may win.
(Hope “sarcasm” not needed.)
Baraq would go have a talk with them...but he never learned out to speak “Austrian”
The “far right” of the Austrian Freedom Party is far right to the mainstream media only because the mainstream media is far left. Center-right parties go along with this nonsense because the Austrian Freedom Party, the German Alternative Party, and the UK Independence Party are their rivals.
This is great news. The FPÖ is most certainly not a National Socialist party, unless one considers most of Europe’s Anti-Islamization parties to also be chock full of Nazis. It’s leader has visited Israel and is positive towards the Jewish nation. He even seems to look favorably on the Tea Party here.
In it’s current iteration, it is a populist party that, yes, wants to preserve the current welfare programs that their people are used to, but by Austrian standards it is fairly conservative/libertarian. The party as it is now (how it may have been decades ago is irrelevant) supports less government, more privatization of businesses, lower taxes. It’s traditionally been a Eurosceptic party too.
Does it have some questionable people in it’s ranks? Sure, but so do almost all the European parties trying to save their countries from the Islamic takeover and third-worldization. There is simply a lot more anti-Semitism throughout Europe among people of all ideological backgrounds than there is here. The FPÖ isn’t like Hungary’s Jobbik, where the party orientation is actually anti-Semitic. Plus, it’s the only major Austrian party that will put the security and interests of its own citizens first. This is a question of national survival. (Yes, they are pan-Germanists, but that idea was around centuries before the Nazis. Austria, after all, used to be considered the most important and powerful of the German states, as anyone who knows European history understands.)
For those wanting to read what the party stand for, this covers some major points:

Norbert was the name of Hagrid’s dragon. Very fitting.
They aren’t?
So being for the two-speed version of the EU, and attacking “Jews” and “Zionists” is not neo-Nazi?
You would be hard-pressed to find any political parties in Europe that resembled US conservatives in any way, shape or form. And even US libertarianism has been tainted by anti-Zionism, so that is not a mark of validity, sorry.
Under the leadership of Heinz-Christian Strache, the FPÖ has focused on describing itself as a Heimat and social party. This means that the party promotes its role as a guarantor of Austrian identity and social welfare. Economically, it supports regulated liberalism with privatization and low taxes, combined with support for the welfare state; however, it maintains that it will be impossible to uphold the welfare state if current immigration policies are continued. That description puts them squarely in the national socialist camp.
As I’ve already explained, the party itself doesn’t attack Jews. The party leader, Heinz-Christian Strache, is pro-Israel. He has visited Israel and has expressed his belief in the Jewish state. Once more, it is not an anti-Semitic party, no more than any other party is because it has some anti-Semites within its ranks. There are actual anti-Semitic parties in the world, and the FPÖ is certainly not one of them. The National Front in France used to have a lot of unsavory characters in its ranks, and still has a few here and there, but I think most Freepers understand that it is the best hope for France’s long-term survival in any recognizable form.
The EU is utterly irrelevant to the Nazi issue, but the party is more anti-EU than most continental Western European political parties (and the two separate Euros policy is simply fairer and economically sounder as far as I can tell without delving into the issue more deeply). And, apparently, by your definition (any questionable members taints the whole party) you consider the Libertarian Party in the U.S. to also be a Nazi party. Thanks for making it clearer how extremist you are on this issue.
I’m sorry, but this new post of yours is something I would only expect from a far-left, Marxist leaning Social Justice Warrior (and only then because they love to exaggerate and make up attacks against the right). There is nothing in what you quoted that even hints slightly at National Socialism, much less proves it. This is exactly the same as Donald Trump’s “America First” message. Do you consider Trump a Nazi too, like the lefties love to claim? It is not Nazism to want to place the interests of your country and citizens first. All elected officials *should* do that. They are elected to look after the social (and all other types of) welfare of their people.
Perhaps you simply do not understand that “Heimat” just means “homeland” in German, you know like our “Department of Homeland Security.” Do you consider that to be our Nazi cabinet department? Or is it preserving “national identity” that you hate so much? Why would anyone be against every country preserving it’s national identity (unless you simply just hate Austria, and want to see it specifically made unrecognizable by the massive numbers of “new Austrians” from the Middle East). Preserving the country’s identity and all that entails is one of the things I care the most about in regard to the U.S.
Any Update?
I'm thinking that, just like US Dems always seem to find just enough votes to prevail in every "close" race, a similar dynamic will hold here.
Still, having an anti-immigrant party coming close to a majority in Austria will be a scare to the EU Establishment.
Being a patriot is considered “Far Right” ......... leftwing-fascist propaganda
Are you serious? Combination of nationalism with socialism is not national socialism? That is exactly how Goering defined national socialism.
There is nothing in what you quoted that even hints slightly at National Socialism, much less proves it
No it is not. Trumps main slogan is Make America Great Again. That is not equivalent to anything jingoistic, nor does it speak to anything related to socialism. Since the FPÖ is a proponent of the two-speed version of the EU, and Trump to my knowledge has not advocated for anything like the so-called North American Union and its associated Amero currency in imitation of the Euro, the differences between them are like night and day.
This is exactly the same as Donald Trumps America First message
Nobody here likes the DHS. Especially due to it being an unconstitutional executive branch department. If that is what youre equating Heimat to (which does not translate as homeland and is not originally a national-socialist concept, but the national socialists introduced a corrupt form of it in an attempt to replace the original meaning), then you are not making the concept itself look as if it has any redeeming qualities. And are you seriously trying to say that the DHS exists to preserve US national identity??
Perhaps you simply do not understand that Heimat just means homeland in German, you know like our Department of Homeland Security. Do you consider that to be our Nazi cabinet department? Or is it preserving national identitythat you hate so much?
