The top ranks of the Republican Party may be coalescing around Donald Trump, but grass-roots conservative activists are still trying to find a way to stop him at the party's convention in July.
Angered by Trump's shifting views on taxes, the minimum wage, national security and how little he discusses social issues, conservatives across the country are studying the party rule book for last-ditch moves they could make when the convention begins in Cleveland.

This is ridiculous. I was entirely in favor of Cruz. But Trump is the nominee at this point.
Most of those candidates barely made a blip on the radar. And most were out after the first 4 states. There were plenty of candidates in 2008 and 2012 too. I certainly remember similarly full debate stages in 2012.
The key difference this time was a strong challenger in Cruz, not the amount of candidates. Cruz got millions more votes than most recent runners-up, even 1.5 million more than McCain did in 2000, which was pretty much a 2-man race back then. Meanwhile Rubio and Kasich each got less votes than Santorum in 2012 or Huckabee and Romney in 2008. Cruz is also only 250,000 votes short of Reagan’s winning total in 1980.
I think this is a made up story to keep the Trumpsters upset. You could gather every name and it won’t be 20 people. Trump has to convince the base that everyone is gunning for him through the convention to keep everybody’s back fur up. Trump is a master at branding and TV manipulation. If everything calmed down people might find out it’s a Democrat and Hillary running against each other.
Did you take at the list of delegates? This whole idea appears to be orchestrated by Curly and that is not his job to be doing this. He is supposed to be non-committed. How they ended up with gross representation for Cruz from the prairie states is very suspicious.
He is plotting to overthrow the nominee..."
Ping to article and comments.
No, it’s just good negotiating. The ol’ art of the deal. Just like Trump isn’t really going to charge a tariff, he just wants to use the threat to extract concessions.
Well, these "conservatives" are actually crypto-Democrats, and RINDBAs [Republican in name, Democrat by action].
They want the Democrat Party to nominate the next justices for the Supreme Court.
“..Why are the delegates trying to meet in secret prior to the convention?..”
They are afraid that their sweet setup in Washington pandering to the liberals for treasure...is at major risk now. They know it. They are in a corner now and the voters do not like them for what they have done to them.
How do you think Romney fits into all this? It’s my feeling that he is the unofficial figurehead of the movement to topple Trump with a 3rd Party bid at the Convention. Some or all of those you listed, hostile to Trump, cleaving toward Cruz, really think they can challenge Trump on the “purity” of their “Conservatism”?Are they not aware that they need THEIR OWN VOTERS to eventually vote in the National ELection, and that THEIR designated candidate is going to have to come from the ranks of Trump primary voters?? Here’s how they may be thinking , because what I just expressed is an absurd scenario and NO ONE would think it could work——Their candidate would try to capture HILLARY voters, for the ultimate goal of defeating HILLARY. I don’t know where Trump voters would go. There is bound to be some level of chaos in any and all scenarios.
This is Morton Blackwell from Virginia (attending Rules committee meetings since 1972 & representing VA since 1988.)
“There are still four ways any rules regarding the 2016 nomination process at the convention can be changed.”
“First, the RNC Standing Committee on Rules could adopt changes, including once again reversing itself and restoring legitimate Delegates right to have their votes counted.”
“Second, the RNC itself could in Cleveland amend the report of its Standing Committee on Rules.”
“Third, the Convention Rules Committee, comprised of two Delegates, a man and a woman elected by each states Delegation, can and always does make amendments to the proposed new rules package it receives from the RNC.”
“Fourth, when the report of the Convention Rules Committee is received by the national convention, the convention itself can adopt new amendments, but only if the convention receives a minority report signed by at least 25% of the members of its Convention Rules Committee.”
“Unfortunately, the January RNC meeting in South Carolina was the last time it was likely to be possible to make changes dispassionately based on what is fair and best for our Party in the rules governing the nomination process at the coming convention. Now every proposed rule change will be evaluated by the effect it would have on the respective candidates still in the nomination contest.”
“The Romney campaign in 2012 broke with the practice of incoming nominees for many decades of allowing the Convention Rules Committee to make its own decisions.”
“If any 2016 candidate comes to the convention with 1,237 or more committed delegates, he might use his power to reform the national Party rules.”
“And it might be possible for two or more of the current four candidates to agree to support a set of reforms in the Party rules that would make those rules more fair and increase the extent to which power in our Party can flow from the bottom up.”
Probably, just about everyone else is DC is on the take, why not add the delegates?
I think Trump will fumigate these cockroaches in the next 4 years. He doesn’t like dishonest, underhanded, crooked deals.
More like a lead pipe and oil drum
These are globalists/progressives - not conservatives.
Romney is certainly behind this. We cross-checked some of the delegate names they supposedly voted for in Colorado, they are Romney retreads.
More importantly, Katie Packer was deputy campaign manager for Mitt Romney. Packer met at the RNC convention privately with Preibus & delegates rules committee people. She heads NeverTrump- Our Principles PAC (OPP) and is Cruz’s biggest super PAC. Their primary mission is courting delegates with tens of millions at their disposal.
OPP’s primary donor is the Ricketts husband & wife owner of The Chicago Cubs.
And Trump clubbed him like a baby Harp seal. :)
The level of virtuousness in both acts was certainly similar.
“Whats also historic about the Trump candidacy is the level of opposition against him. He only has 41% of the primary vote currently. Hes the only GOP candidate besides McCain since at least the 70s to get under 50% and hes running 5 points under McCain currently.”
And what is also historic is the fact that Trump was running against 16 fellow candidates, so just by sheer force of numbers, no candidate was going to get to 50%, a little fact you neglect to mention. The sin of omission.
Yer playin with fire, #Clever. :)
I already addressed that. 95% of the votes went to 4 candidates in this race. That’s almost exactly the same as went to the top 4 in 2008. The last three primaries all had a lot of candidates. Most of them in this one were non-factors and dropped out early.
