Mocked and forgotten: who will speak for the American white working class? (GOPe wants them dead)

The National Review, a conservative magazine for the Republican elite, recently unleashed an attack on the “white working class”, who they see as the core of Trump’s support.

The first essay, Father Führer, was written by the National Review’s Kevin Williamson, who used his past reporting from places such as Appalachia and the Rust Belt to dissect what he calls “downscale communities”.

He describes them as filled with welfare dependency, drug and alcohol addiction, and family anarchy – and then proclaims:

“Nothing happened to them. There wasn’t some awful disaster, There wasn’t a war or a famine or a plague or a foreign occupation. ... The truth about these dysfunctional, downscale communities is that they deserve to die. Economically, they are negative assets. Morally, they are indefensible. The white American underclass is in thrall to a vicious, selfish culture whose main products are misery and used heroin needles.”

A few days later, another columnist, David French, added:

“Simply put, [white working class] Americans are killing themselves and destroying their families at an alarming rate. No one is making them do it. The economy isn’t putting a bottle in their hand. Immigrants aren’t making them cheat on their wives or snort OxyContin.”

.....

Downscale communities are everywhere in America, not just limited to Appalachia and the Rust Belt – it’s where I have spent much of the past five years documenting poverty and addiction.

To say that “nothing happened to them” is stunningly wrong. Over the past 35 years the working class has been devalued, the result of an economic version of the Hunger Games.....The working class only had their hands. They lost and have been left to deal on their own.

NR is indeed the mouthpiece for the GOP establishment aka elite.

Whatever the % of these white voters - the point of the article is they lost their political voice - the establishment does not care, regardless of the % of the population. Also, I don’t think these white populations mentioned in the article are vastly outnumbered by black or hispanics, do you even know the %?

In any case, whatever their population % they are being ignored while black and hispanics and other groups (upper class whites, urban whites) are not being ignored.

I honestly find your post willfully ignorant in its points.

NR is not a publication for the Republican “elite,” for starters.

The facts contradict you.

Playing video games does not cause delinquency - before video games the bowling alleys were filled. The article shows you very clearly that the people that are suffering are not suffering because they play video games.

Although he is quite full of himself, he does make some valid points.

You may enjoy digging through that pile of horse manure looking for the pony, but I'll pass.

Supporting the black, Hispanic middle class = good

Supporting the white middle class = bad

Someone needs to force them to explain this on tv.

The gloBULList turds have sold this country out. Putting America back to work will reduce the dependency cycle. Your fixation on pornography as the root of all evil is a bit weird. Get over it. There are much bigger problems than that.

I have seen the GOP try and blame social issues for the economic wipe out out that is happening in many communities like the rust belt. It's as if the Rick Santorums of the GOP don't want to focus on globalization and instead deflect the blame onto video games or porn or anything else than the offshoring of jobs to Mexico and China.

When I saw the transgender bathroom thing become an issue - while I hate the issue and think it is more gay rights nonsense - I recognize it as an attempt of the establishment to once again distract the base away from economic issues and focus on BS social issues. The shiny object to remove focus from globalization policies in the lime light today both on the left by Sanders and on the right by Trump.

I understand problems in American culture. I just don’t see the white middle-class causing it. It’s more a combination of them getting squeezed in by Hollywood sleaze, corrupt government and the black lumpen proletariat and criminal class.

We used to be able to expect more from NR and the right side punditry. The NR screed in question is intellectually dishonest, morally myopic and generally contemptible.

The GOP kept cutting taxes on the rich - but supply side trickle down economics only works if the rich use their tax savings to spend and invest inside the USA. When globalization happened in the 90s the rich invested their tax savings overseas in China and deposited the profits in overseas banks. So the rest of the population did not see any significant economic growth - that is why I think wages of shrunk or become stagnate.

Your post is spot on with one notable exception and that is Rick Santorum is NOT a Free Trader at all. Him, Trump and Sessions are the best we got.

Santorum would be a great pick for VP.

I live in Appalachia, and my friends and associates are really good people. They are very very hard working people who, like Trump, love and cherish their families. They help others in community even though their own income is low.

Are these the people you are talking about?

To be honest, I was never a great fan of NR. We had it in our house as kids and I never got into it. I always thought it was elitist. When I got older I preferred the American Spectator. I was also a fan of the New Republic which in the 80s was fairly conservative. Martin Peretz, I think, was the editor. Did a great cover story on slob Teddie with an accompanying caricature.

I apologize if I mis-characterized Santorum's economic position but they have used social issues to distract us from economic issues for way too long - because those social issues bother us greatly.

The problem for them is that this worked for a while as long as economically the base was getting by with enough to make economics lower on their totem pole than social issues. That is no longer the case it seems.

"Are these the people you are talking about?"

Of course not - you know who I am talking about, surely you've seen them and slowly shook your head.
If there are none in your community, God bless you, but that's not the norm throughout America.

Quite a rant, but the present day young women have determined to do it alone and their primary goal is “to make a difference”. That does not for many include being mothers or wives.

that of courese is not universal, but the numbers are such that they have knocked America off balance, off course.

Women are in fact to blame

A friend gave me a gift subscription to NR. I read every page. The longer I had the subscription, the more I disliked it.

I consider my self VERY Conservative-—and when the sub ran out, I declined to renew it.

They keep CALLING me to get me to renew.

Sound desperate to me. I won’t every buy another page of that rag.

Boy, the generalizations on this page are mindless! The entire white middle class is a disaster as are half the population of the USA (women).

I’m so glad I don’t live in this glass-is-completely-empty world.

Why was the demoralization of American culture a strategic Soviet objective?
